Ma Rainey, Mother of Blues, was the most popular blues singer of the 1920s. She is the first woman to introduce blues into her performances. She established an entertainment company in 1917 and after a successful career in vaudeville managed theaters in her home state of Georgia.

It’s a great day to Celebrate Teenie Harris and the entire Harris Family. Thank you to Carnegie Museum of Art for honoring this legacy.

Today I couldn’t help but be emotional as I visited the homes of my ancestors at Mesa Verde National Park. I’m grateful to those who work to ensure that these sacred spaces are cared for and respected for future generations to experience.
