We’re always amazed when we find out that some lesser animal can impregnate dozens of females. This is the normal case for mammals that don’t pair bond. Bulls can get a whole herd of cows pregnant. Sea lions have those massive harems for a reason. A lion pride has just one or two males. Humans are evolved to have a single mate and protect it with their young, so we don’t have this massive virility boost. On the other hand we live a lot longer and have romantic love. And our kids love their dads. I’d say it’s a fair trade. Otherwise you may as well boggle your eyes at the great virility of the codfish, which fathers 2 million eggs at a shot.
