People always ask me why I'm so private about my personal life, Well this is why. During my first year of college I was rooming with someone I had known since we were kids, we grew up together, told each other everything...... This is the kind of friendship you think is built different because it survived high school. Back to the story, I always keep a journal, Wrote in it every single day. Kept it somewhere I was certain nobody could get to it. Came back from class one afternoon to find her sitting in the middle of the room with a group of people. Reading from it. Out loud. Performing it like it was entertainment. She had gone out of her way to get into it too, she made a deliberate decision to break in and expose me in front of an audience. I stood there in that doorway and something shifted in me permanently that day. We have not spoken since and it has been over thirty years.

Of course we’re blocking supersized pick up trucks in Europe. They don’t fit in our streets and they’re ugly as hell. And most importantly they’re a public safety hazard.

So God loves only American troops? Not innocent people who lost their lives in Iran? Where was God's "miraculous protection" for them? This is the inevitable result of believing that God is on "our side." It's making a false god in our image: a god who despises Iranians.

Hi, I'm part of the problem. Story time! My oldest daughter, was the tallest kid in her class until 6th or 7th grade. In Kindergarden, a boy pushes her, and she tells the teacher. Teacher does nothing. My kid tells her mom and I when we pick her up. I tell her that if someone hits her, she's within her right to hit them back, but if they stop hitting her, she needs to stop too. I told her that she should never be the first one to hit someone, but if she needs to the be last one to hit someone who hit her, she's never going to get in trouble with me. Next day, same kid, hits my daughter, so she pushes him and he falls. Cries like he's being murdered apparently, and the teacher gets involved, sends my kid to talk to the principal. I talked to the principal, explained this story to him, and told him if he needs to suspend my kid, do it. At the time, I told her the school can make problems for her, but if they do, I'll talk to the school. So yeah, I guess I'm part of the problem. But you see, I want my kids to be prepared for the real world, because we live in the real world.

I almost died giving birth to our daughter. Forty-two hours of labor. Emergency C-section. I remember the cold of the operating room and the way the doctors wouldn’t meet my eyes. They said if we had waited another hour, one of us wouldn’t have made it. I woke up stitched, shaking, numb from the chest down. He didn’t hold my hand. He didn’t cry. He just asked the doctor if the scar would be “permanent.” When we got home, I could barely walk. I couldn’t laugh without pain shooting through my stomach. I needed help sitting up. He complained that the house was messy. Said maternity leave wasn’t a vacation. Two weeks postpartum, he stood over me while I was trying to latch the baby and said, “You know women are supposed to give birth naturally. My mom did.” I thought he was joking. He wasn’t. One night I overheard him on the phone with his brother saying, “She didn’t even give birth properly. They just cut her open.” Cut her open. Like I wasn’t split in half to bring his child into this world. When I finally looked at my scar in the mirror, still swollen and purple, I didn’t see weakness. I saw survival. But every time he looked at me, I saw disappointment. Then it got worse. He stopped touching me. Started going to the gym every night. Said he “needed a woman who takes care of herself.” I was still bleeding. Still leaking milk. Still waking up every two hours. One evening he tossed a waist trainer onto the bed and said, “You should start fixing it before it’s too late.” I asked him what “it” was. He pointed at my stomach. I slept in the nursery that night. Not because the baby cried. Because I did. Now he tells people I’ve “changed” since having the baby. That I’m emotional. That I don’t try anymore. I almost died. I gave him a daughter. I carry a scar that aches when it rains. And somehow I’m the one who failed. I don’t know who I married. I don’t know how to leave. But I know this can’t be what love looks like.

Also nothing funnier than me reading this book and Lancelot is repeatedly described as “gorgeous, beautiful, perfect at everything, huge chest” and thinking about Hans going “I know who this is”

Anonymous Tonight a regular leaned in and whispered a slur about the family sitting at a table, like I’d agree. I didn’t react. Just said, “Hey, we don’t do that here. Don’t say that again.” He kept going. So I said, “I’m closing you out.” He laughed at first, then realized I was serious. Started going on about loyalty, how long he’s been coming here. I let myself into the men’s bathroom. The women’s bathroom was under construction at work and I didn’t have enough time to go to another floor to find another. Nobody was in there so I slipped in. While I was in the stall I heard the door open and I yelled out “sorry, a woman is in here, hope you don’t mind!” The man said “no problem” and came in and went into a stall. A couple more men came in while I was washing my hands and I told them about the ladies room being under construction. They said no problem, and that we should just use this restroom while we’re here. I stepped out of the bathroom and saw another woman and she said “can we use the men’s room?” and I told her the men seem ok with it. It went on like that all day, all of us using the same bathroom, the men cautious not to use the urinals and the women knocking before entering. It was fine, everyone was fine.
