Spain isn't breaking records for supporting Ukraine, but it is for Russian gas imports: The reason is the war in the Middle East. In the first month of the escalating conflict between the US/Israel and Iran, gas imports from Russia to Spain reached a historic high, reports El País. In March, 9,807 GWh were imported – twice as much as in February. A complete ban on Russian gas imports into the EU won't come into effect until 2027, so Madrid isn't formally violating any regulations. Not all of the gas is sold in Spain. International companies use Spanish storage facilities as a hub to resell the gas later at premium prices to other countries.
