Responding to the announcement that the Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally, will be the next Archbishop of Canterbury, the Rt Revd Dr David Walker, Bishop of Manchester @bishmanchester said: “I am delighted that Dame Sarah Mullally is to be the next Archbishop of Canterbury. She is a person of great wisdom and insight, as well as deep Christian faith. It is a particular joy to me that we now have a woman in the office of archbishop, only a decade or so since women became eligible for episcopal posts in England. In the years I have known and worked with Bishop Sarah, I have found her to be a great bishop and an excellent colleague. Please join me in holding her in our prayers as she prepares to take up this most demanding of roles.”

The Right Reverend Dr David Walker, Bishop of Manchester, has issued this statement in response to the attack on Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue this morning. “I am deeply shocked and saddened by the violent incident that has taken place this morning at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, Manchester. My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected –  the victims, their families, and the wider Jewish community – especially on this sacred day of Yom Kippur. “Such acts of violence have no place in our communities. Manchester is a city built on diversity, mutual respect, and unity. As we showed after the horrific terrorist attack of 2017, the way we defy those who seek to sow seeds of hatred in our community, is to draw closer to one another in love. Hate can never defeat hate, only love can conquer hate. “Today, we stand in solidarity with our Jewish neighbours and reaffirm our shared commitment to peace and safety for all. I commend the swift response of the emergency services and offer my full support to those working to bring healing and justice in the wake of this tragedy. “Let us continue to pray for those injured, for the community in grief, and for the courage to stand together against hatred in all its forms.” +David @BishManchester

The Shades team had the privilege of presenting the work of the project to an inspiring group of global faith leaders last week: 🇲🇾 Bishop Danald (Malaysia) 🇧🇿 Bishop Phillip (Belize) 🇨🇦 Anita (Canada) 🇧🇼 Bishop Methla (Botswana) 🇿🇦 Essie (South Africa) 🇮🇳 Revd Lopa (India) Sharing stories of race, identity, and belonging in this space was a powerful reminder: our work is deeply interconnected, and justice has no borders. @DioManchester @BishManchester #ShadesProject #GlobalJustice #FaithAndRacialJustice #RacialJustice #TogetherWeRise

In his Thought for the Day on BBC Radio 4 this morning, Bishop David @bishmanchester reflected on the courage it takes to change direction when faced with new truths -whether in politics, faith, or life. Inspired by yesterday's ordination of deacons at @ManCathedral and the transformation of St Peter and St Paul, he reminds us that true change is not weakness, but a response to deeper conviction. This morning Lord Falconer, assisted dying bill sponsor, told BBC R4 it was "correct" that the role of the Lords was to "ultimately uphold something that the directly elected members of the Commons have decided to go ahead with" (in the presenter's words). That's not right. 1/-

Today we mark the eighth anniversary of the Manchester Arena terror attack, which claimed 22 lives and left many others seriously injured. We pray for all those affected; for bereaved families and friends; for those who were injured and for all the people of Manchester as we continue to grieve and remember. The Glade of Light Memorial, located near Manchester Cathedral, will serve as the focal point for remembrance throughout the day. Manchester Cathedral will also hold three services during which the names of the 22 victims will be read aloud: •9:00am – Morning Prayers •1:10pm – Holy Communion •5:30pm – Choral Evensong All are welcome to attend. The cathedral will remain open all day for those who wish to light a candle or offer prayers. #prayformanchester @BishManchester @BishMiddleton @matthewporteruk @ManCathedral
