Starbucks announced Thursday that U.S. baristas and shift supervisors will be eligible for quarterly bonuses of $300 — up to $1,200 a year — starting this July, as part of CEO Brian Niccol's "Back to Starbucks" turnaround plan.
The bonuses are tied to whether individual stores meet sales, operational, and customer service targets. The company is also expanding tipping options so customers can tip via credit card on mobile orders and when scanning the app at the register — something previously not possible. Weekly pay for all U.S. employees kicks in August. Combined, Starbucks estimates the changes could boost eligible workers' total compensation by 5% to 8%.
There is a catch — baristas at unionized locations, roughly 5% of U.S. stores, will not receive the bonuses until a collective bargaining agreement is reached. The union called the move "clearly a reaction to our organizing" and noted the bonuses are largely outside workers' control.
