Have you ever thrown a book across a room? And if so, why?

How do people explain the sons of nobles who went on to become churchmen? Priests? Bishops? Popes? These are the brothers of the cynical Machiavellians who only lust for power and raped their way across a continent.. they were rationally satisfied to go to a monastery or administer a church? How do you explain the behavior of notable figures like Edward the Confessor? Charlemagne? Saint Louis IX? The hundreds of thousands who went on crusade and died in the deserts? Ambroise (iirc) said that 500 counts (landed nobles) died at the siege of Acre. FIVE HUNDRED wealthy nobles who had literally nothing to gain, two thousand miles from home.. ?? "hehehe they were there for the raping and pillaging" According to your theory they could have been raping and pillaging next door.. no reason to travel to the Middle East. You have to have virtually no real knowledge of the medieval period, from St. Patrick or St. Boniface to Matthew of Clermont or The Chevalier Bayard to think that medievals were, as a rule, insincere or one-dimensional cynical Machiavellians. And to be clear, I don't fault people for not knowing. I fault them for being so confident in their ignorance.
