Ears out, tail swinging – Kaikai is on a mission. And then, just like that, she runs out of steam and plonks down for an impromptu dust bath and siesta!  When she arrived in our care, we knew we were in for an uphill battle. An orphaned newborn, she was confused and missing her mother, spending her first nights pacing her stable and crying. We assigned two of our most experienced Keepers to her care, and as the days and weeks unfolded, Kaikai started to heal from her emotional trauma. Today? She is full of mischief and growing by the day.

Lenny is 17 months old and has firmly established several important facts about himself. He is fast. He is sociable. And he is, as this footage confirms, equally at home in the water as he is on dry land. Born in December 2023 to ex-orphan Lima Lima, Lenny is the 67th known wild-born calf to an orphan raised through our Orphans' Project. Many more have arrived since, but we think you'll agree there is something uniquely special about this water baby. It's probably because of his mother – a suspected poaching orphan who established herself as the scout of the herd, looking out for her elephant family and Keepers alike. Alongside this responsible streak runs a verve for life that sees her parenting lean decidedly hands-off! Leaving Lenny to run riot in the water (supervised by us, of course!) Thirteen years ago, Erika’s world was made of concrete floors, busy streets, and endless exhaustion, as a begging elephant. When she first arrived at our centre, all it took was one look into her eyes for us to know that she deserved so much more, a life filled with comfort, care, slow walks on soft grass, the quiet hum of birds in the forest, and peaceful afternoons spent beneath the trees. It has almost been a month now since Ella, Erika’s closest companion, passed away due to old age. But Erika still carries the memory of her dearest friend with her. She still lingers around the paths they once explored side by side, pausing near the spots where the two shared quiet moments together. Their bond was extraordinary, and a part of Ella continues to live on with Erika. Today, every splash in her pool, every gentle step that sends soft vibrations through the earth, and every moment spent surrounded by her herd reminds us of the power of rescue, rehabilitation, and compassion. Here’s to 13 years of healing, friendship, and second chances, happy rescueversary, Erika! 🐘
