I am introducing legislation to strip the CA Coastal Commission of the powers it's been granted by federal law. This will be necessary for rebuilding Los Angeles. The Commission is completely out of control and has veered far from its purpose of protecting the coast. For example, it recently tried to stop SpaceX launches because commissioners didn't like Elon Musk's political posts. Those launches, incidentally, involve Starlink satellites that are now being used by first responders and victims of the fires. Two years ago, the Commission blocked a desalination plant in Huntington Beach that would have increased LA's water supply. It has consistently taken actions that worsen California's housing crisis and has stood in the way of important national security activities by the Navy. My bill will amend the Coastal Zone Management Act to remove the Commission's authority to block national security-related activities, critical infrastructure projects, and activities with high economic impact, including post-disaster recovery and rebuilding.
