Taxing non-income-producing property is wrong. Homeowners should not be forced to work to pay "rent" to the government for the privilege of living in their own homes. Property taxes should only be levied on income-producing property, as the income provides a means to pay the tax.

Exempting property taxes does the opposite and creates unaffordable housing markets. Its because of land value. Land value will perpetually rise and you can either allow private sector price gouging or you can create affordable housing with land value tax

In Florida the plan is to get rid of property tax for *ALL* homesteaders. It will maximally benefit young families and it will create a more affordable housing market. It allows seniors to downsize and young families to purchase without annual "rent" payments to govt. A win-win.

It's true that property taxes have low economic distortion compared to income and sales taxes. But there's a tax that has even lower economic distortion than property taxes: a Land Value Tax (LVT). Unlike property taxes, LVT targets just the land's value, not improvements. It doesn't penalize you for fixing up your home, or developing the land. It encourages development and discourages speculation holding. Even further, it captures the "unearned" value boosts from *community* investments, and returns that value to the local community. It's a tax system that reduces bureaucracy and rewards smart land use, thereby infusing positive systemic effects on homeowners, businesses, the economy, and the community as a whole.
