Netflix uses Python. Google uses Python. Anthropic uses Python. Meta uses Python. xAI uses Python. Perplexity uses Python. DeepSeek uses Python. Instagram uses Python. Spotify uses Python. Dropbox uses Python. Reddit uses Python. Pinterest uses Python. Uber uses Python. Airbnb uses Python. Quora uses Python. And yet Python is ‘too slow’ for your project?

We had over 400 open tickets in the backlog this morning. I realized that managing them was taking up valuable engineering time. So I just selected all of them and changed the status to closed. My reasoning is that if a bug has been there for two years, it's not a bug. It's a core structural element of the user experience. The PM called an emergency meeting and asked where the Q2 roadmap went. I told him the roadmap was in our hearts now. We don't need a Kanban board to tell us how to write code. If a user actually cares about a feature, they'll submit another ticket. It's essentially a natural selection process for software requirements. Only the strongest complaints survive the great purge. Someone pointed out that I deleted the compliance tasks for GDPR. I just smiled and said privacy is an illusion anyway. The legal team is drafting a memo about my actions. I'm hoping they put it in Jira so I can close it too.

Today we're excited to announce NO_FLICKER mode for Claude Code in the terminal It uses an experimental new renderer that we're excited about. The renderer is early and has tradeoffs, but already we've found that most internal users prefer it over the old renderer. It also supports mouse events (yes, in a terminal). Try it: CLAUDE_CODE_NO_FLICKER=1 claude

🇮🇷🇻🇦 The president of Iran just publicly condemned Trump's blasphemous depiction of himself as Jesus He also condemned Trump’s insults towards His Holiness, “on behalf of the great nation of Iran.” For context that makes this more significant: Jesus is a revered prophet in Islam, mentioned more times in the Quran than the Prophet Muhammad The Islamic Republic of Iran is defending the Pope against the president of the United States. We really do live in a simulation. Source: @drpezeshkian

What’s the line for you Christians? What’s the final straw? “Epstein is a hoax” wasn’t too far. No new wars to war with Iran wasn’t too far. F bombs on Easter morning wasn’t too far. $5 a gallon gas wasn’t too far. Threatening a “whole civilization” that they would die in a night wasn’t too far. Attacking The Pope wasn’t too far. What about this? Trump posting himself as a Jesus like messiah figure. Complete blasphemy and antichrist vibes.

Judging by my tl there is a growing gap in understanding of AI capability. The first issue I think is around recency and tier of use. I think a lot of people tried the free tier of ChatGPT somewhere last year and allowed it to inform their views on AI a little too much. This is a group of reactions laughing at various quirks of the models, hallucinations, etc. Yes I also saw the viral videos of OpenAI's Advanced Voice mode fumbling simple queries like "should I drive or walk to the carwash". The thing is that these free and old/deprecated models don't reflect the capability in the latest round of state of the art agentic models of this year, especially OpenAI Codex and Claude Code. But that brings me to the second issue. Even if people paid $200/month to use the state of the art models, a lot of the capabilities are relatively "peaky" in highly technical areas. Typical queries around search, writing, advice, etc. are *not* the domain that has made the most noticeable and dramatic strides in capability. Partly, this is due to the technical details of reinforcement learning and its use of verifiable rewards. But partly, it's also because these use cases are not sufficiently prioritized by the companies in their hillclimbing because they don't lead to as much $$$ value. The goldmines are elsewhere, and the focus comes along. So that brings me to the second group of people, who *both* 1) pay for and use the state of the art frontier agentic models (OpenAI Codex / Claude Code) and 2) do so professionally in technical domains like programming, math and research. This group of people is subject to the highest amount of "AI Psychosis" because the recent improvements in these domains as of this year have been nothing short of staggering. When you hand a computer terminal to one of these models, you can now watch them melt programming problems that you'd normally expect to take days/weeks of work. It's this second group of people that assigns a much greater gravity to the capabilities, their slope, and various cyber-related repercussions. TLDR the people in these two groups are speaking past each other. It really is simultaneously the case that OpenAI's free and I think slightly orphaned (?) "Advanced Voice Mode" will fumble the dumbest questions in your Instagram's reels and *at the same time*, OpenAI's highest-tier and paid Codex model will go off for 1 hour to coherently restructure an entire code base, or find and exploit vulnerabilities in computer systems. This part really works and has made dramatic strides because 2 properties: 1) these domains offer explicit reward functions that are verifiable meaning they are easily amenable to reinforcement learning training (e.g. unit tests passed yes or no, in contrast to writing, which is much harder to explicitly judge), but also 2) they are a lot more valuable in b2b settings, meaning that the biggest fraction of the team is focused on improving them. So here we are.

The degree to which you are awed by AI is perfectly correlated with how much you use AI to code.

Any student of history will tell you this is an extremely dangerous moment. People like Trump who make wild threats to do insane homicidal things again and again are full of shit—until they aren’t. All the safeguards are gone. The generals have been removed. Our allies have been alienated. Congressional Republicans will follow Trump to the apocalypse. We really are on the razor’s edge of total disaster here and millions if not billions of lives hang in the balance.
