An analysis of prescribing decisions for nearly 30,000 patients found most clinicians did not order preventive medications for patients with elevated lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) levels who were at low risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, some clinicians did prescribe lipid-lowering therapy. In rare cases, patients received aspirin or a PCSK9 inhibitor, according to a multicenter retrospective cohort study of patients who were tested for Lp(a). mdsc.pe/4t2qnpW

A quick, outpatient nasal swab can detect early biological changes linked to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) years before cognitive or memory symptoms present. Sampling cells in the upper nasal cavity via a minimally invasive brush biopsy may be able to detect AD years before symptoms appear. Investigators analyzed brush biopsy samples from the olfactory cleft — the narrow upper region of the nasal cavity that houses the olfactory epithelium — and identified immune and neuronal changes that mirror those seen in the brains of people with AD. These signatures distinguished individuals with preclinical and clinical AD from healthy control individuals. mdsc.pe/4t2DwPJ

About one third of primary care physicians (PCPs) surveyed by Medscape said more than 20% of their patients also need mental and/or behavioral health treatment. Eighty-four percent of them feel that PCPs must play an essential role in this care, due to high needs and a shortage of specialist providers. This infographic presents key findings from a new Medscape report on how PCPs are helping shoulder rising demand for this care in the US. The unhealthy lifestyle behaviors that may underlie the notorious “freshman 15,” — ie, weight gain that some students may experience in starting college, often persist well into adulthood and are linked to a greater likelihood of having increases in BMI levels in early adulthood compared with those who have healthy lifestyle habits early on, new research showed. mdsc.pe/487EYs2

An individual patient data meta-analysis of two randomized trials involving treatment-naive patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) found that a hand-dominant joint involvement pattern was associated with a modestly better response to both conventional synthetic and biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (csDMARDs and bDMARDs, respectively), whereas a polyarticular joint involvement pattern predicted a worse response. mdsc.pe/47isTQx

Researchers are rethinking how we study tuberculosis and the results are surprising. A new “breathing” lung-on-a-chip model, built with multiple human lung and immune cell types, mimics real respiration and reveals how TB behaves in its earliest stages. In a recent study, the chip not only recreated key features of infection but also showed how coordinated cell interactions may help limit disease—offering new insight into TB progression and potential treatment strategies: mdsc.pe/4sCMYtA
