Yesterday, I honoured the invitation of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation at the launch of its landmark report titled “Strengthening the Nexus Between Democracy and Economic Growth in Nigeria.”
The report and the robust panel discussions that followed did not just present data; they reiterated the necessary truth that we have failed in critical areas of development: health, education, and pulling our people out of poverty. Over the past decade, our democratic progress has weakened while the economic well-being of our people has continued to decline.
Consensus thinking from the event is that our leadership recruitment process must change for democracy to thrive. The recruitment must be based on competence, capacity, compassion, character, and commitment to serving the well-being of the people. And for it to thrive, our institutions must be strong, independent, and accountable to the people.
We must rebuild trust in our institutions, restore discipline in Leadership, and ensure that governance translates into measurable improvements in the lives of Nigerians.

A major controversy has erupted today, April 10, 2026, after old tweets traced to Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan resurfaced online, showing clear and unapologetic support for the APC and President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general elections.
The posts, originally made in March 2023 via the handle @Sundayvibe00, included statements like “Victory is sure” while celebrating APC performance during gubernatorial polling. The tone of the tweets was openly partisan, projecting strong allegiance to the ruling party at the time.
As the screenshots went viral on X, the account was abruptly altered. The handle was changed to @Sundayvibe00, the profile was locked, and it now carries a “Parody Account” label, a move widely seen as a clear attempt to distance from the exposed posts.
Nigerians are now demanding his immediate removal, insisting that such visible political bias disqualifies him from overseeing a neutral and credible electoral process ahead of 2027.
The backlash has intensified nationwide, with growing calls that the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system cannot be entrusted to someone with a documented history of partisan advocacy.

Nigerian lawyers and judges are the biggest problems we have in this country. Not even the politicians. This is why the profession is shrouded in secrecy, and the judges administering junk judgments don’t like to be in the news. The current INEC Chairman is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). Emperor Wike is a Life Bencher, and his wife is a Justice of the Court of Appeal. Your Senate President, Akpabio, was a lawyer for donkey years before joining politics. Those defending government atrocities are all lawyers because they were trained to find nuances and run with them. If you are looking to cast aspersions, also look in the direction of lawyers and judges. Just last month, our justices were given houses by the politicians of the day in high-ranking estates in Abuja. Are you expecting justice for the common man to come from these folks? Some of us left law practice because this country is awfully unlawful and has made it a difficult terrain for us to practise. There’s no way on earth you will practise law in Nigeria without truncating justice. Otherwise, you will remain a poor fellow. Hold Nigerian lawyers and judges equally responsible for the sad and sorry situation of the dungeon we are in, in Nigeria. A classless, lawless, impecunious, and pauperish fast-paced evil society.

A Call to Reflect: The Death of Brigadier-General O. Braimah
The moment I heard of the killing of yet another soldier, Brigadier-General O. Braimah, who was killed alongside other army personnel in a Boko Haram attack at Benisheikh, I was quickly reminded of what other countries commit to when it comes to rescuing their endangered soldiers on the battlefield.
Such unfortunate incidents serve as a clarion call for all of us to reflect more deeply on the value we place on the lives of all citizens, including those who stand in defence of our nation, and on the urgent need to strengthen our collective resolve in safeguarding them.
May God grant his dear wife, the families of all the fallen soldiers, and indeed all those who lost their lives in the incident, the fortitude to bear this painful loss. May their souls rest in peace, in honour of their supreme sacrifice for the nation. -PO

BREAKING: NBA threatens to discipline Nafiu Gombe's lawyer, others who deliberately file frivolous ex parte motions to interfere in intra-party affairs
Adhering to calls by eminent legal minds in Nigeria to intervene in the ongoing judicial rascalities in the country, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by Mazi Afam Osigwe, has threatened to take firm steps to deter such conducts.
In a statement on Friday, @afamosigwe stated that "Lawyers who deliberately file actions aimed at procuring judicial interference in intra-party affairs, or who seek ex parte or interlocutory orders in clear violation of statutory provisions, risk facing disciplinary proceedings. We will not hesitate to present petitions before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) against any Legal Practitioner found to be engaging in such conduct. This will be pursued decisively to serve as a deterrent and to preserve the sanctity of the judicial process."
Recall that on September 4, 2025, Justice Emeka Nwite of a Federal High Court in Abuja, declined to grant an application seeking to stop the Senator David Mark-led leadership of the main opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), pending the hearing of the substantive suit.
The judge had refused the three prayers sought in the ex parte motion filed by Mr Gombe, a former deputy national chairman of ADC, and moved by his lawyer, Michael Agber.
Rather, Justice Nwite had directed Gombe, the plaintiff in the suit, to put all the defendants on notice to show cause why the motion should not be granted.
The judge then adjourned the matter until September 15, 2025, for the defendants to show cause.
However, the Mark-led ADC approached the Appeal Court to challenge the lower court’s jurisdictional power to hear the suit, and the appellate court ordered the parties to go back to the trial court and maintained the status quo ante bellum pending the determination of the case.
Gombe, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025, had sued ADC, Mark, Aregbesola, INEC, and Chief Ralph Nwosu as 1st to 5th defendants, respectively.

OUR LAWS AND DEMOCRACY MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL TIMES
The Nigerian Bar Association has closely monitored recent political and legal developments as the nation gradually approaches the 2027 General Elections. These developments, particularly those arising from the interpretation and potential application of provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, raise serious constitutional, democratic, and rule-of-law concerns that require immediate intervention.
We particularly deprecate the disturbing involvement by lawyers and courts in the internal affairs of political parties despite the clear provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, which stipulates in Section 83 of the Act that “No court in Nigeria shall entertain jurisdiction over any suit or matter pertaining to the internal affairs of a political party.”
Not only are courts denied jurisdiction to entertain any matter pertaining to the internal affairs of a political party, but they are also precluded from granting any interim or interlocutory injunction even where any action has been brought in violation of the Act. The section further provides that “Where such an action is brought in negation of this provision, no interim or interlocutory injunction shall be entertained by the Court, but the Court shall suspend its ruling and deliver it at the stage of final judgment and shall give accelerated hearing to the matter”.
What we now see are situations where actions are not only instituted in Courts by lawyers in clear violation of the Act, but Courts purportedly grant interim and/or interlocutory injunctions in clear contempt of statutory provisions of the law. This does not augur well for our democracy. Democracy will not thrive in a situation where lawyers and courts take actions and decisions that not only negate our laws but also do violence to them. This emerging trend of subverting the clear letters of the Electoral Act and dragging courts into the internal affairs of political parties through disingenuous litigation, forum shopping, and malafide applications designed to secure undemocratic political advantage, bodes no good for our democracy. Such practices, if not immediately curbed, would directly contradict the clear intendment of the Electoral Act and risk transforming the judicial processes into avenues for political score-settling or electoral manipulation.
We must reiterate that these provisions were clearly designed to curb abuse of court processes and discourage forum shopping in political disputes. This is therefore why the NBA is concerned that the abuse, misapplication, or selective deployment of these provisions may create opportunities for manipulation capable of undermining democratic competition and shrinking the political space.
Members of the Bar are reminded that they are Ministers in the Temple of Justice and not political agents seeking judicial endorsement of partisan objectives. The filing of actions intended to draw courts into internal political party disputes, particularly where jurisdiction is expressly excluded, constitutes an abuse of court process and a violation of professional responsibility.
The NBA will take firm steps to deter such conduct. Lawyers who deliberately file actions aimed at procuring judicial interference in intra-party affairs, or who seek ex parte or interlocutory orders in clear violation of statutory provisions, risk facing disciplinary proceedings. We will not hesitate to present petitions before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) against any Legal Practitioner found to be engaging in such conduct. This will be pursued decisively to serve as a deterrent and to preserve the sanctity of the judicial process.
The Nigerian judiciary must stay vigilant and resist being drawn into political theatrics. Courts should firmly decline invitations, no matter how artfully crafted, to intervene in matters the law explicitly bars them from.

U.S. Security Alarm on Nigeria: A Bad Omen
The recent directive by the United States to evacuate its embassy staff from Nigeria due to rising insecurity is deeply worrisome and should be treated as a national emergency, especially for a country already struggling to attract investors.
Nigeria currently ranks fourth in the Global Terrorism Index, yet insecurity continues to worsen - lives are being lost and communities remain under constant threat. There is a glaring absence of effective governance; instead, what prevails are schemes that undermine democratic processes, as though politics has taken precedence over the safety of citizens.
The U.S. directive is a clear signal of declining confidence in our national security architecture. Disturbingly, reports indicate the loss of yet another Army Brigadier General to terrorists in Borno earlier today. A nation where people cannot live, work, worship, or travel safely cannot progress or attract investment.
The primary duty of any government is the protection of lives and property, yet in this regard, we as leaders have fallen short over the years. Our failure continues to place immense strain on our troops, who make the ultimate sacrifices.
Sadly, as Nigeria deteriorates, we as leaders, like Nero, remain preoccupied with politics, forgetting that without security, there is no nation to govern and no future to campaign for.

1 John 2:1-2 describes exactly what Jesus is doing right now.
"My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world."
Jesus, seated at the Father's right hand, serves as our Advocate (like a defense attorney or intercessor). When we sin as believers, He doesn't abandon us—He pleads our case based on His perfect righteousness and finished work on the cross (His propitiation/atoning sacrifice). This isn't begging a reluctant God; it's presenting His own blood and righteousness on our behalf, securing ongoing fellowship and forgiveness.
It's deeply comforting and amazing: the risen Christ lives to intercede for us constantly (Hebrews 7:25; Romans 8:34). He knows every failure yet stands for us. That's active grace today.
