🇮🇶🇮🇷 Why are millions turning out in Iraq for an Iranian leader's funeral? Iraq is majority Shia, roughly 60-65%, and to his followers Khamenei was more than just Iran's ruler. He claimed the status of marja, the kind of cleric people actually model their lives on, though that title was always contested. His scholarly standing never really matched Najaf's own Grand Ayatollah Sistani, who has a far bigger following among Iraqis. Geography does a lot of the work too. Najaf and Karbala, 2 of the holiest cities in Shia Islam, sit in Iraq, not Iran, and already pull millions of pilgrims every year for events like Arbaeen. Then there's the politics. Iran's allies in Iraq, including the paramilitary Popular Mobilisation Forces, had every reason to turn out a massive, camera-ready crowd. And under Saddam Hussein, Iraq's Shia majority was brutally repressed, clerics jailed or killed and mourning rituals banned. So big open displays like this also carry the weight of a community that spent decades unable to gather freely.
