Next Tuesday–Thursday (24–26 March), the Irish Medical Council’s legal team will present its case against him. The core allegation? That his social media commentary was “inappropriate” and/or “undermined public health guidelines.” Yet many of his statements — once condemned — now appear prescient: • “The pandemic is over, NPHET lack the expertise to analyse current data…” (Oct 2020) • “NPHET are a liability.” (Oct 2020) • “No change in deaths, so lockdown a complete waste of people’s time.” (Nov 2020) • “There is no public health emergency… There is a dire need for Irish people to wake up and take back their freedom.” (July 2021) • “Health services would be overwhelmed if everyone wasn’t vaccinated – not true. Vaccinate the vulnerable; everyone else gets a cold.” (Aug 2021) This case raises a fundamental question: should doctors be punished for dissenting views — even when time proves them right?
