I went straight to the backseat and made myself comfortable by the side of the window. The driver and everyone else inside turned their heads on me as if I'd stolen something. It wasn't that, but it was due to the fact that I sat on Sdumo's seat. Only 2 seats were left in the taxi, one just behind the driver's seat and one at the back where I sat. This other lady started to tell me how angry Sdumo would be if he found me on his seat, and all the other people including the driver started convincing me to move before he came in so to avoid chaos but I didn't succumb to the pressure. We continued to wait for Sdumo for 3 more minutes, then he arrived, Sdumo is an unruly 7 year old primary school kid😭💔

A surprising takeaway from this scene: I-2k- the younger woman taking her ARVs, while the older man Jonasi who infected her rejects treatment for herbal remedies & slowly deteriorates. It speaks to evolving HIV awareness & the importance of science-led care. There's also an irony in Joyce's revenge. She had Jonasi infected because "I will never birth a child who becomes like you". Yet by the end, because Lindani adheres 2 treatment while Jonasi refused to, the story leaves open the possibility that Menzi may be spared the fate that ultimately consumed his father, despite sleeping with Lindani at the funeral. More than anything, it reflects how far South Africa has come in spreading life-saving information about HIV treatment, adherence & prevention.
