we live on a planet where trees warn each other of danger through underground networks. where octopuses dream. where elephants return to the bones of their dead and stand over them in silence. where bees communicate through dance, showing each other where to fly. where flowers bloom...where crows remember human faces -especially those who were cruel to them - and pass that memory on to their young. where ants build entire cities. where cats purr at a frequency that can help heal bones. where forests, after fires, grow flowers first.

The scariest finding in this paper: the subjects couldn't tell it was happening. UPenn ran this study on 48 healthy adults. One group slept 8 hours. Another slept 6. Another slept 4. For 14 straight days. They tested cognitive performance every 2 hours from 7:30am to 11:30pm. The 6-hour group's reaction times, working memory, and sustained attention deteriorated on a near-linear curve. By day 14 they were performing at the same level as someone who hadn't slept at all in 48 hours. The 4-hour group hit that threshold by day 6. Here's the part that should unsettle everyone who thinks they "do fine" on 6 hours: the subjects' self-reported sleepiness flatlined after the first few days. Their brains kept getting worse. Their perception of how impaired they were stopped updating. The cognitive decline was invisible to the person experiencing it. The researchers found a hard threshold. Any wakefulness beyond 15.84 hours in a day produces cumulative neurobiological cost. That cost compounds every single day you exceed it and does not reset with a weekend of sleeping in. About 35% of American adults sleep less than 7 hours a night. 40% of those get 6 hours or less. In 1942 that number was 11%. We built an entire professional culture around a sleep schedule that this paper says is functionally equivalent to pulling consecutive all-nighters. "I'm fine on 6 hours" is the most common response to sleep research. The first thing chronic sleep debt destroys is your ability to notice chronic sleep debt.
Nicholas Fabiano, MD@NTFabiano

Sleeping <6h a night for 2 weeks reduces cognitive performance equal to 2 nights of total sleep deprivation.

Here is the list of NASA science missions that the Trump administration proposes to terminate. Note that it includes many missions that are already in space, fully operational. This is a wrecking operation against America.

We need to talk a bit about how utterly absurd the March heatwave was in the USA. This heatwave would have been impossible without a boost from climate change, but even with climate change it remains a deeply unlikely event. A thread looking at some of the numbers. ๐Ÿงต

Trumps border wall isnt just a monument to xenophobia, its a monument to Ecocide. Watch this mountain lion, an apex predator reduced to a desperate scavenger, trying to squeeze through steel bars to find water. This is the "security" they sold us: a landscape turned into a cage. The ecological illiteracy of this administration is staggering. By slicing through the Arizona-Sonora border, theyโ€™ve blocked up to 85% of wildlife migration. They arent just stopping people; they are stopping the genetic flow of entire species, ensuring local extinctions for the sake of a photo-op. Tear down the barriers to survival. Protect migration corridors, not political egos. #SaveWildlife #NoWalls #WildlifeRights #ClimateAction #TrumpEcocide @BD_SCBG @realDonaldTrump @Wildlife_Update @Sky_Islands @CenterForBioDiv @SierraClub @Earthjustice @NatlParkService

God does not bless any conflict. Anyone who is a disciple of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs. Military action will not create space for freedom or times of #Peace, which comes only from the patient promotion of coexistence and dialogue among peoples.

Itโ€™s hard lately not to feel a sense of perpetual loss. The Forest Service is being dismantled, emperor penguins are endangered, increasingly no one can read. These were all choices that could easily have been avoided. We could have built a really wonderful world.
Volcaholic ๐ŸŒ‹@volcaholic1

๐Ÿšจ The emperor penguin is now officially endangered. Climate change is shrinking the sea ice they depend on to breed, and when it breaks too early, chicks drown before they even have a chance. Some colonies are collapsing completely.
