✍️ Liverpool close to appointing Etienne Reijnen as an assistant to Arne Slot, a move that will cease - for the time being - speculation about his future. Reijnen, says Slot, is “some I rate very highly” telegraph.co.uk/football/2026/…

@AnfieldEdition Not a good look that, he’s still a league winning manager. I wish they would announce him leaving before Sunday as he deserves a decent reception. He won’t get that if people still think he’s here next season.

Liverpool FC is top of the table, but not of a league to be proud of. A 4-2 pasting at the hands of Aston Villa on Friday night affirmed the Reds’ mediocre season on the pitch. But, according to campaigners, Liverpool is number one in complicity in the Gaza genocide. War on Want have published a league table of Premier League clubs’ ties to Israeli actions in Palestine. Liverpool are ahead of north London rivals Arsenal and Spurs in joint second place. Man United and Man City are tied in third place while the fourth spot is shared by Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton and Fulham. The league table is part of a report entitled Red Card: English Premier League Complicity in Israel’s Atrocities Against the Palestinians. The report says at least 15 Premier League sponsors have connections to the military assault on Gaza, the construction of illegal settlements and the wider system of apartheid. Liverpool’s shirt sponsor, Standard Chartered, provided $15.4bn (£11.5bn) to 24 complicit businesses between January and August 2025. The Premier League itself is sponsored by Barclays bank, which the report says has provided billions to 49 complicit companies. Neil Sammonds, senior campaigner on Palestine at War on Want, said: “These clubs speak proudly about equality, inclusion and community. Yet behind the branding, some are using ‘sportswashing’ to sanitise corporations connected to some of the gravest crimes and humanitarian catastrophes of our time. “Palestinian footballers are being killed. Stadiums are turned into detention camps. Child players are buried beneath rubble. “The Premier League has shown before that it can act when sponsorship becomes morally toxic. The question is why Palestinian lives appear to count for less.”

Note to @MoSalah & Salah FC: Champions League Final, 2018. Real Madrid 3 - 1 Liverpool Sergio Ramos bullied Mo, dragged him down & dislocated his shoulder. Made him look like a little boy. Cried off the pitch. 26 yo btw - a grown man. He was still a nobody then. “Doubted” by most, “believed” in by few. Instead of criticising him in mixed zones or mocking him on Instagram, fans and teammates rallied around him. Built him up. Made him the legend he is. Now in 2026 when his club, fans and teammates needed the same faith repaid, he divided us. Prioritised his own image & ego. Egged on by tourist fans who won’t be around 10 years on. A legacy spoilt. #LFC

Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool as a giant of the club but his attack on Arne Slot made him look small and spiteful. If he is in the business of dishing out hard truths about this season, maybe he should take a look at himself, too dailymail.com/sport/football…

I don’t like that Salah statement. He’s essentially calling out the new signings from last summer. He’s saying that Isak, Wirtz and Frimpong weren’t the right type of player to join LFC. Because there’s no way he can criticise Ekitike’s contributions and Kerkez’s style of football is 100% Heavy Metal intensity.

I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions. It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that. Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve. I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies. That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good. It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it. Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games. Liverpool will always be a club that means a great deal to me and to my family. I want to see it succeed for long after I have moved on. As I’ve always said, qualifying to next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen.

Xabi Alonso had a plan when he was about to leave Real Sociedad B (Sanse). Go to a top European side with ambition. Bayer Leverkusen was chosen. If it didn’t work out, then go back to Real Sociedad as a first team manager. If it did, then he aim to go to Bayern Munich (which came off the list after Leverkusen won the league, it did not make sense for Xabi to aspire to join a rival of his biggest success), Real Madrid or Liverpool. Once he told me he would love to manage in Anfield but that the natural way of things would be for Steven Gerrard to go there first, and the return of the prodigal son seems far-fetched now.  We know the tension at Liverpool, but also that Arne Slot will remain beyond the summer. It is easy to say, “wait for that to go wrong or for it to finish naturally”. But football managers have to take decisions when offers arrive. And we know that in this game, two plus two is not always four. So the very real possibility of Xabi Alonso managing Chelsea comes in that context. Very rarely a manager chooses in football (Pep getting a national side at some point will happen, a dream of his, but Pep is Pep), football chooses for you, it is the game that imposes the timing.  We are hearing from sources very close to the Chelsea decision makers that they are going to tweak the system to give the manager more voice. That is Xabi’s first win and you are never stronger than when you are negotiating to land in a club.
