Seeing 1776 at Ford’s Theater. I can’t think of a more perfect theater to be seeing this musical during the 250th!

I'm attending the annual Mule Days at Leatherwood event in the foothills of the Blue Ridge in Ferguson, N.C. Mules are very important in American history. George Washington was an early promoter of mules.

Everytime I fly out of Birmingham I’m reminded of one of the most bad ass quotes of all time. 🇺🇸

On his #SouthernTour, POTUS Washington traveled from Georgetown to Hampton Plantation on May 1 1791 where he was hosted by Harriott Pinckney Horry and Eliza Lucas Pinckney for a mid-day luncheon. Ms. Pinckney, shown here, is known for her work in agriculture. She successfully brought indigo to South Carolina. Today, Hampton is a state site and well worth a visit!

On April 30, 1789, George Washington delivered the first inaugural speech at Federal Hall in NYC. Observers noted that Washington spoke softly, almost inaudibly. Washington stressed the importance of a strong Constitution and the importance of public good.

Architect of the Capitol (AOC)
George Washington was sworn in as the nation's first president #OTD 1789, on the balcony of Federal Hall in New York. 🇺🇸 These #CoxCorridor murals at the U.S. Capitol show the scene and the building. #America250

The #CoxCorridors of the #USCapitol's House wing are elaborately decorated with wall & ceiling murals incl. historical scenes, portraits & maps related to the development of the U.S. Nearby, the Hall of Columns houses part of the #NSHCollection of statuary donated by the states.

I much enjoyed the audience last weekend in Bethel, N.C. when the Blount Library hosted me for a talk on Washington's #SouthernTour. I'm here with Blount Library chief Erin Reece and Bethel mayor Carl Wilson. Thanks for the hospitality!

UVA Karsh Institute of Democracy
On Jan. 1, 1812, John Adams wrote to Thomas Jefferson for the first time in 11 years, quietly rekindling a broken friendship. In the Karsh Institute's latest “Defining Moments in American Democracy” episode, Jane Kamensky of @TJMonticello explains why their reconciliation is relevant now more than ever. #va250 #america250

OTD in 1791, continuing his #SouthernTour along the South Carolina seaboard, President Washington crossed the Waccamaw River to Georgetown. GW dined with community leaders at a luncheon, then that afternoon took tea with over 50 ladies. GW enjoyed learning about the agri-business of rice.
