Web3 Summit

Great to see the developer activity at @Web3summit Open-source code only goes as far as the people who run with it. Shout out to the independent validators, collaborators, and third-party teams who kept infrastructure moving last week. 🙌

some of my reflections after web3 summit: parity has built some incredible things which completely abstract the blockchain(s) away. this was the original theory behind polkadot - blockchains which all serve different purposes, but work together in ways to enable a cohesive whole. this whole allows us to build protocols on top of those infrastructure components which are decentralized, uncensorable versions of things which web2 developers are well-acquainted with: message passing, hot storage, syncing and notifications, along with the added bonus of having native (fully private!) payment rails alongside the entire thing. in case it's not obvious, privacy for not just payments but for all things polkadot is a theme here. this means decentralized web hosting (yes, your react site will work too), addressable sites (dotNS), universal sign in (with the polkadot app) - while keeping the ability to stay private across different services, and selectively choose who or what you reveal your identities to. it might not have been clear with the prototypes demonstrated at the summit, but there is a massive focus on user experience and real-world applications which allow people to finally truly have a stack which is fully integrated to build on in web3. this is no easy feat, but the building blocks are there and worked extremely well for the Summit participants - proof that we can build things and roll out stuff that enables people to build this new internet with us. there is a lot more in the pipeline and what we have showed the world is only a small part of the massive integrated stack that gav touched on in his "Polkadot 2030" talk. no, it won't take until 2030. and i'm very happy everyone liked my stickers and was able to win them after achieving their personhood playing the game. 🖤

One of the things that makes Web3 Summit unique. Yesterday, the Pala team hosted an informal student networking session as part of the summit's participatory program. Around 30 students joined the gathering to connect with builders, researchers, founders, and fellow students interested in the future of Web3. A special highlight was seeing Dr. Gavin Wood stop by to chat with participants, answer questions, and exchange ideas in a relaxed setting. We should be asking ourselves about AI sovereignty. @nsrniceks talk was a sharp reminder that AI sovereignty isn’t an abstract debate. With American cloud dominance already shaping today’s digital infrastructure — and future AI dominance increasingly tied to who controls compute, data, and platforms — Europe should be thinking seriously about its own solutions.
