After the dams came down on the Klamath River, the Yurok Tribe didn’t wait for nature to fix itself. For over 100 years, four dams turned a living river into a series of warm, stagnant reservoirs. They blocked salmon and steelhead from more than 400 miles of historic spawning grounds, fueled toxic blue-green algae blooms, raised water temperatures, and contributed to devastating fish kills. When the dams were finally removed, the river could finally flow freely again. But the exposed reservoir beds were barren, unstable, and in desperate need of help. So the Yurok Tribe got to work. Along a 38-mile stretch between the former Iron Gate Dam and JC Boyle Reservoir, tribal members hand-sowed 11,500 pounds of native plant seeds and planted 76,000 trees and shrubs, all by hand. They weren’t just “planting trees.” They were stabilizing soil, restoring culturally important plants, rebuilding shade and habitat for salmon, steelhead, and countless other species, and helping a damaged river system begin to heal. The river is already starting to breathe again. Fish are moving upstream into areas they haven’t reached in generations, and the land is greening up.
