I’m betting that we see a comeback of this soon. Especially now that AI has commoditized building software. Instead of using AI to produce larger amounts of slop, let’s use it to build higher quality, polished and fun software. We just need builders that care. ❤️

Seems like the default back then was software was built so thoroughly and so well, that developers even had time to sprinkle in their own fun twist into it. Nowadays it feels like a lot of products have been over-optimized for getting users from point A to point B, with very little consideration for the amount of joy experienced in their journey there.

Remember when software used to come bundled with games and hidden easter eggs? Even my TV in 2010 came with games. Somewhere along the way humans lost this expectation for joy in interfaces.

Taking a screen recording of your UI and playing it back slowly remains one of the best ways to hold a high quality bar. Extremely easy to see layout shift, unwanted flickers, unclear states, etc.
