Fareed Zakaria and I have long been on the same page when it comes to China and its approach to the chaos that is American economic and foreign policy. What China has done as a superpower is evolve to beat America at its own game. It’s able to do that because it has no shareholder class, but more importantly, it has built the economic and technological framework to play the long game against an adversary wired for short term gains. Short term is not how China operates, it has 10 and 25 year plans and it has spent decades preparing for this moment when the world sees the US as an unreliable transnational extortion gang. The U.S. has long been doing China’s work for them with numerous self inflicted wounds from poor economic and foreign policy to outright predatory behaviour. They have just bided their time waiting for Trump to set himself on fire after he realised that he could not crush the Chinese economy with his failed tariff strategy.
