@JofChalcedon People in 1982 had less than expensive houses relative to wages. People in 2026 have more expensive houses relative to rates. Therefore at 10% rate is an extremely dangerous rate that will knock people from coping to not coping.

The beginning point of any serious de-escalation has to begin with X, because it’s a war of aggression that the US and Israel keep ramping up, and Iran responds. You can’t negotiate without at least beginning with an even vaguely accurate understanding of the situation.

The war isn’t ending any time soon, if diplomatic signalling is a guide. Iran is clear: if Israel and the US do X, we do Y. No real mystery. But when diplomats tell Iran to stop doing Y, ignoring X, we are not moving toward de-escalation. We just stalled at the starting point.

Israel is threatening to destroy Tyre. Tyre (Sour) is Lebanese. But also part of world history: cradle of Phoenician seafaring, source of Tyrian purple - the colour of Roman Emperors, the birthplace of Stoicism, and site of Alexander’s famous siege. An assault on us all.
