The historic Carroll Street bridge, one of the most quaint and charming in the city (not that we have favorites) should reopen as pedestrian and bike only. Would be a lovely addition to Gowanus! (cc @CMShahanaHanif)

“Car drivers have gotten used to not having access [to the bridge] already. So why introduce deadly vehicles back to a place where they’ve been barred from for years?” nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/03/17/bro…

And before everyone starts freaking out—remember, this is about the end of CRIMINAL tix against cyclists. Cops can still—and will still—write traffic tix to bike riders. A red light ticket will cost bike riders the same $190 as a car driver, despite the big difference in threat.

Starting March 27, NYPD will start treating cyclists the same as drivers by stopping the Adams-era practice of writing criminal summonses to cyclists for minor traffic offenses. @SophLebo reports at the Zohramp:

Very happy to see this. I've represented many cyclists given these criminal summons & the wasted time & anxiety they were forced to endure, which drivers committing the same violations do not, was unconscionable. Thanks to @ZohranKMamdani for returning sanity to thise enforcement

Gov. Hochul rallied for her Big Tech-backed auto insurance deregulation agenda in Albany on Wednesday, but our esteemed colleagues in the Capitol press corps were no longer buying what the state chief executive was selling. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/03/19/thu…

EXCLUSIVE: Mayor Mamdani ends the NYPD's criminal crackdown on cycling, a controversial anti-bike policy that the Adams administration admitted was based on community chatter, not actual data. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/03/18/mam…

Thank you to Mayor Mandani for standing with the working class. Ending criminal tickets for cyclists over minor infractions marks a New Era for our city. Today we close a chapter of fear and injustice for delivery workers and move toward safer, fairer streets for all. @LosDeliveristas ✊🏼

@nypost For the record, cyclists can and still will get tickets. So the Post headline is wrong; it's merely the "criminal" crackdown on cyclists that has ended. Real news here: nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/03/18/mam…

Ticketing cyclists more aggressively than drivers never made sense. Kudos to the Mamdani administration for reversing this. It is important that everyone follow the rules of the road - but a delivery worker missing a stop sign shouldn’t get swept up in deportation proceedings.

@C_Sommerfeldt True! We reached out and got this: "NYPD spokesman Brad Weekes told Streetsblog that the entire administration is on the same page regarding the shift away from criminal summonses. 'The department will be following through on this directive,' Weekes said.

streetsblog has been doggedly covering the criminal summons crackdown on cyclists since it quietly started last spring. we've stayed on the old administration and asked the new mayor about the program a dozen times since he took office. accountability journalism works
