And before everyone starts freaking out—remember, this is about the end of CRIMINAL tix against cyclists. Cops can still—and will still—write traffic tix to bike riders. A red light ticket will cost bike riders the same $190 as a car driver, despite the big difference in threat.

Ticketing cyclists more aggressively than drivers never made sense. Kudos to the Mamdani administration for reversing this. It is important that everyone follow the rules of the road - but a delivery worker missing a stop sign shouldn’t get swept up in deportation proceedings.

@C_Sommerfeldt True! We reached out and got this: "NYPD spokesman Brad Weekes told Streetsblog that the entire administration is on the same page regarding the shift away from criminal summonses. 'The department will be following through on this directive,' Weekes said.

streetsblog has been doggedly covering the criminal summons crackdown on cyclists since it quietly started last spring. we've stayed on the old administration and asked the new mayor about the program a dozen times since he took office. accountability journalism works
