At 13 years old he joined a gang called the 2100 gang with his friends but many of his friends began dying and some went to jail before turning 21. Crazy part is that on his 21st birthday he was almost killed too. On October 22, 2013 (his 21st birthday), 21 Savage was in a car with his best friend Johnny B. when two guys tried to rob them during a quick errand. The shooters opened fire without warning. 21 Savage got hit six times, one bullet on his arm, collarbone, neck, hand and finger. He tried to shoot back but his gun jammed. His friend Johnny was killed instantly (shot in the head) but 21 savage survived, but one bullet in the neck nearly killed him. He was traumatized after that incident of losing another friend right in front of him on his own birthday. A few months later, in March 2014, his little brother T-man was also killed. That pushed him to leave the streets. That trauma fueled the “savage” persona and gave him the drive to try music instead of dying in the streets.. he got inspired by 50 Cent (who got shot 9 times and turned his story into rap success). He chose the name “21 savage” because many of his friends died or went to jail before turning 21 after street gang they joined. He dropped his first tape (The Slaughter Tape) in 2015 and never looked back.
