Plebs, Bitcoin miners, human rights defenders unite! The European Commission (EC) is about to take a draconian and unscientific stance towards Bitcoin that can not only pave the way for an EU mining ban, but could have far-reaching consequences for the entire global Bitcoin community. Context: The EC is developing a methodology to calculate and mitigate the environmental impact of Bitcoin. It includes a proposal to measure all crypto-assets resource consumption "per transaction", and only evaluates the negative impact of Bitcoin using a suite of suite of reports that have ben financially backed by Central Banks and Ripple Corporation This is a nonsense metric that was been previously debunked by Cambridge University in 2018. The fact that the EC have ignored both the science, and the sea-change in the Bitcoin ESG narrative this year shows that their intentions have nothing to do with sustainability, and everything to do with protecting intrenched interests who could be disrupted by Bitcoin. If the EC wins, BTC will be officially labelled "an environmentally harmful asset that undermines sustainability goals for the EU" It will also enshrine the ECs right to use bogus-metrics to evaluate environmental impact, while ignoring quality peer-reviewed research showing the positive environmental externalities of Bitcoin. They will then promote this standards/labelling globally. What can you do? * Send a draft of 1-5 pages to @jardemalie or @lyudakozlovska using succinct objective language and evidence, by THIS FRIDAY 7 DEC or email lyudmylakozlovska@odfoundation.eu In your submission, highlight: ✅why and how Bitcoin can be a net-benefit to the environment ✅point out that a framework which only evaluate only negative externalities of a technology is incomplete, unobjective/ unscientific ✅cite high quality references Show examples of how Bitcoin mining can help meet the EUs sustainability goals (for example: WOSTP has already written that "vented methane based crypto-asset mining is more likely to help than hinder the US Govts climate objectives") ❌DO NOT "it's energy use is justified because", "Other assets use more energy", or debating whether climate change is occurring or use language that personally attacks any one ✅DO highlight that every technology initially has a carbon footprint, use evidence to show that emissions are not increasing and that there is a realistic chance Bitcoin can become the first industry to fully mitigate emissions without offsets, point out known limitations in current models, use your own examples of Bitcoin's positive environmental impact that are less known ✅Retweet this message, and mobilize other honeybadgers Currently, the EU relies on reports like this: greenpeace.org/usa/wp-content… Counter these claims, showing evidence of where they are provably false, misleading due to missing context, inaccurate, or no-longer-true Now is the time to channel your time, passion, and brain into defending freedom. We do not have the resources, the entrenched powers, the ability to spread FUD widely through mainstream news channels that the opponents of Bitcoin do. We don't agree on everything as Bitcoiners. But we all agree on one thing: that is the need for a global currency together with global mining that cannot be centrally controlled, attacked, manipulated and suppressed. Today's the day to fight for the continuation of that freedom * Original EU Report on Bitcoin which contains ample examples of statements you can rebut europarl.europa.eu/RegData/etudes… Here's some examples of 1. Bloomberg came to Iceland to cover Bitcoin mining and I got to say a few words on why our industry is not the enemy of the environment many have claimed it to be.
Bloomberg Crypto@crypto

Iceland runs almost entirely on renewable energy, which Bitcoin miners have been buying to power data centers. But environmentalists worry the demands will result in more power plants, which could damage unique ecosystems trib.al/RmxxGoh

I've read and thought about the Ripple decision for a few days now, and here are some thoughts from the perspective of someone with an appellate law background. (I clerked on the DC Circuit and the Supreme Court, and practiced as an appellate lawyer.)

1/9 After years as a climate activist/tech-founder I set up a climatetech fund I thought I was making a difference But the tech we invested in 1. was high-risk (might never scale) 2. would only reduce emissions post-2030 3. wasn't addressing our most urgent emission issue 🧵

Bitcoin mining is essential for the renewable transition Here's why in one less-than-10-tweet thread To achieve net zero, IEA report we will need 10x more demand response That's grid jargon for "really really flexible consumers who can shut off and power on any time" 🧵

GM! Def not at my best but after 20 km on the bike erg I went to 40 max push-ups from chest to ground to lock out. For a total of: 80 pushups, 100 situps, 20km bike erg. So my chosen June challenge (which I am starting on the 18th 🙄) is: 200km bike 500 pull-ups 1000 push-ups 1500 sit-ups This is all extra-curricular so normally I will do a 60min workout as well but whatever I do within that does not count towards the challenge. Anyone joining? 😅
Daniel Jonsson@dfjonsson

Coincidentally, one of the challenges for the month of June at my gym is doing 1000 push-ups (collected over the course of the month). I haven't started yet so thanks for the motivation I guess. I should be somewhere in the 30-50 range in one go I believe.

EU & MiCA news! 🇪🇺🇪🇺 After the EU Parliament's plenary vote on April 20, MiCA has cleared its last formal hurdle this morning. It was adopted by the Council of the EU (EU member states) - a purely formal vote after the political agreements last year. Next steps: 1) Publication in the official journal of the EU (shortly) 2) Entry into force 20 days after that 3) Entry into application - 12 months later for stablecoins (& stablecoin issuers) - 18 months later for other crypto-assets and CASPs Final MiCA text: data.consilium.europa.eu/doc/document/P… My MiCA deep-dive on everything you need to know (MiCA's origin, goals, rules, and impact): paddihansen.substack.com/p/the-eus-mica… Today's Council of the EU press release: consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press…

Habemus MiCA! 🇪🇺🚀 After more than 2.5 years of consultation, heated debates, last-minute amendments, and very close votes in the committee, the EU Parliament's plenary today passed the new EU crypto framework with an impressive majority of 517 MEPs for and 38 votes against. MiCA is the most comprehensive regulatory framework for crypto assets in the world, which is why (besides fears that it could ban bitcoin in the EU at some point last year) it has attracted global attention in the crypto community. Providing regulatory clarity amid global uncertainties, combined with its large single market of 450 million consumers, could make the EU the next natural global hub for crypto projects. Since there is still a lot of confusion about MiCA’s rules and their impact on crypto projects (be it CeFi, DeFi, NFTs etc.) and I received a lot of questions that I unfortunately can't answer all, I wrote an in-depth "MiCA Primer" about everything you need to know now - from MiCA’s origins, goals, rules for token issuers or crypto asset service providers to my thoughts on its implications for the industry in the EU and globally. I hope this is helpful. Feel free to ask any other questions in the comments, and let me know if you disagree. And last but not least: It’s spoken “mee-kaa” :P paddihansen.substack.com/p/the-eus-mica…
