But the SEC IS actually deeper top to bottom, not because of rankings but because of Power Ratings (a much better gauge of how good a team is). There is no question that the Big Ten is stronger at the top, but once you get past, say, USC, the SEC shows its strength. The real kicker is that the SEC's worst team, Kentucky, is stronger than the five lowest-rated teams in the Big Ten.
If people want to argue about the accomplishments of the Big Ten/SEC, I'm down for that. But debating about the overall strength of the conferences seems pointless as the data shows the SEC is overall a better league.
I do agree that the polls should not be for ANYTHING relative to solving disagreements about which teams are better or worse than others.

Sorry to quote tweet myself, but again, railing on the AP poll is wasted breath.
On the other hand, using the AP poll as any evidence of conference strength is worse. The AP poll is a guide, a historical marker, and the best we can do.
But as "proof" of SEC strength -- useless.

@Bachscore I'm not an AP poll basher. Voters do their best. But there is a general perception in CFB that the SEC has better depth than the B1G, and it's really because the B1G has 3 teams better than anyone in the SEC. Lack of strength at top is incorrectly correlated to SEC depth/strength
