to be communicated for the good of others. “is not edified.” This is the final verdict. The speaker may give thanks well, “but the other is not edified.” That settles the issue. Edification is the governing test in 1 Corinthians 14. Paul has said, “He that prophesieth edifieth the church” (1 Corinthians 14:4). He has said, “Seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church” (1 Corinthians 14:12). He will say, “Let all things be done unto edifying” (1 Corinthians 14:26). If the other is not edified, something has failed in the public use. Edification means building up. The hearer must be strengthened, instructed, comforted, warned, or helped by truth he can understand. If the words are unknown, the hearer receives no building. He hears sound, but receives no sense. He witnesses thanksgiving, but cannot join it. He is present in the meeting, but not profited by that speech. This phrase is deadly to religious showmanship. The question is not whether the speaker had a moment. The question is whether the other was edified. If not, public speech has missed Paul’s standard. The church must be built by understanding, not merely exposed to sound.

He has just asked how the unlearned man can say Amen at another man’s giving of thanks if he does not understand what is being said. Now Paul explains the problem. “Thou verily” means Paul is granting something true about the speaker. He is not accusing the man of having wicked motives in every case. He is not saying the man is necessarily lying, mocking God, or deliberately being false. The speaker may be sincere. He may be spiritually engaged. He may be giving thanks from his spirit. But sincerity does not settle the issue in the assembly. That is an important correction. A thing can be sincere and still unprofitable to the church. A man can mean well and still fail to edify. A believer can be emotionally moved and still leave the hearers in the dark. Paul is not judging only by the inward feeling of the speaker. He is judging public ministry by whether the body is built up. In the church, the question is not merely, “Was the speaker sincere?” The question is, “Was the hearer edified?” This phrase helps us avoid two wrong extremes. We should not automatically assume every confused person is malicious. But neither should we excuse confusion just because someone is sincere. Paul gives the speaker credit where possible, but still corrects the practice. That is mature Bible judgment. “givest thanks well,” Paul says the man “givest thanks well.” That means the thanksgiving itself may be legitimate. The man may be thanking God for the right things. The words, if understood, might even be good. The problem is not thanksgiving as such. Thanksgiving is commanded throughout Scripture. Believers should give thanks always, in every thing, and for all things according to God’s will. The issue is that the thanksgiving is not understood by the other person. This is a powerful point. Even a good spiritual act can fail the public assembly if it does not edify. Thanksgiving is good, but if the church cannot understand it, the church cannot join in it. The speaker may give thanks well between himself and God, but the assembly does not receive the benefit unless the meaning is known. That is why Paul has been insisting on interpretation, understanding, and words easy to be understood. The phrase also shows that Paul is not against spiritual warmth. He is not attacking prayer, praise, worship, or thanksgiving. He is putting them under the rule of edification. In public worship, good content must be made understandable. A good thing hidden from the hearer does not build the hearer. “but the other” The word “but” introduces the contrast. Paul turns from the speaker to “the other.” This is where charity enters the matter. The carnal man only thinks of himself. “I gave thanks.” “I felt blessed.” “I had an experience.” “I spoke with the spirit.” Paul says, “What about the other man?” What about the unlearned? What about the hearer? What about the person who cannot say Amen because he does not understand what was said? That phrase “the other” is a rebuke to self-centered spirituality. Public ministry must consider others. The assembly is not built around one man’s experience. The church is a body. If one member speaks, the goal should be the profit of the body. Charity “seeketh not her own” (1 Corinthians 13:5). Therefore, a man walking in charity cannot be satisfied that he was personally engaged if the other man was left unedified. This applies far beyond tongues. The preacher must consider the hearer. The teacher must consider the student. The singer must consider the congregation. The one praying publicly must consider those who are expected to agree. The writer must consider the reader. Truth is not to be locked inside the speaker’s experience. It is
