Veiling is getting a bump today in the discourse (all these topics are cyclical, of course). So, as we like to do, let's look at history. Here's a page from a 1962 book on "American Catholic Etiquette" - note the wording: "A head covering, preferably a hat, is obligatory, but a scarf or a veil is permissible." The point: the veil wasn't the point, and was even last on the list - the head-covering was, and none of your great-grandmothers would have explained or justified it by talking about "veiling the sacred." The fortieth day of the Ascension has been celebrated continuously in the Church, as attested by homilies by Augustine in the 4th Century, Leo the Great in the 5th, and Gregory the Great in the 6th. Un. Interrupted. Practice. Until the calendar reforms of 1969.

@EricRSammons @TaylorRMarshall Well, the only TLM in my diocese is four hours away, and the nearest one in a different diocese is 2 hours. I did pray the monastic office Lauds for Ascension. I’m going to count that. It’s not the fault of the laity that Church leaders made a mess of this stuff.

To paraphrase my friend @TaylorRMarshall: If you didn't celebrate the Ascension today, you're not on the team.

Politics aside – the same Protestants who will smash statues and icons of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, will tell you that erecting a golden statue of a president is absolutely fine.
