Joe Rogan had Konstantin Kisin and Francis Foster (from Triggernometry) on the JRE and they went down a rabbit hole. They discussed how the 1960s counterculture movement — hippies, “make love not war,” drop out and tune in — may have been heavily influenced or even promoted by intelligence agencies. Rogan noted how many key Laurel Canyon musicians had parents in high-level military intelligence, and brought up the Manson family’s strange connections as a possible way to discredit the peace movement. If major cultural shifts that shaped modern society were at least partly engineered from above, it makes you question how much of what we think is organic rebellion actually is. This episode really made me rethink that whole era. It’s wild how much we assume was purely grassroots. Do you think the 60s counterculture was mostly authentic, or do you suspect intelligence agencies played a bigger role than we realize?
