After losing his beloved dog in 2012, Wang Yan, a wealthy steel manufacturer from Helong in northeast China, began searching for his missing pet. His search led him to a dog slaughterhouse, where he was deeply disturbed by the horrific conditions he witnessed. Instead of walking away, Wang made a life-changing decision. He used his personal fortune — approximately 3 million yuan (around $470,000 USD) — to purchase the slaughterhouse outright. He immediately shut down the operation and transformed the facility into a rescue shelter for dogs. Over the following years, Wang devoted his entire wealth to caring for more than 2,000 rescued dogs. He refused monetary donations, asking instead for food and supplies to support the animals. His selfless act gained international admiration, though it ultimately left him financially depleted. Wang Yan’s story stands as a powerful example of compassion and sacrifice, turning a place of suffering into a sanctuary of hope for thousands of dogs.

A dog owner who was caught on camera punching and dragging his cowering rottweiler has been handed a five-year ban from owning animals. Malik Zoubiri, 31, was filmed repeatedly beating his pet dog Dyson outside a block of flats in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. After police and the RSPCA were made aware of the video, an investigation was launched which revealed the true extent of Zoubiri's abusive behaviour which included submerging Dyson in water and not feeding him for days. Tragically the physical and mental harm was so severe that Dyson has since been put down.   In the footage, Zoubiri can be seen holding Dyson as he repeatedly smacked the dog on his back. Zoubiri then drags Dyson by one of his hind legs before wrapping the chain lead around the neck of his visibly distressed pet and then dragging him into the apartment block.  Police and RSPCA officers attended his property on April 11 2025, where they rescued Dyson from the home. This sparked an investigation which left a vet shocked at the physical and mental torment bestowed on the defenceless animal.
