Takashi Miike’s The Bird People in China (1998) is as (goodnaturedly) obtuse as you’d expect from a Japanese perspective on their disconnect with the rest of East Asia, but it’s terribly funny and looks GORGEOUS. The splotchy guerrilla camerawork captures Yunnan beautifully.

Will there be more Hanuman films remastered in the future? I won't promise when, as this already took a century to finish... but I ain't done with this mad monkey man yet.

@LucianoMet26544 The “Maxximum Edition” of The Maxx was recolored from scratch, as apparently master materials to replicate the originals were lost or unusable. I actually think they look really nice. But they really don’t look a damn thing like the 90s issues I read.

@LucianoMet26544 In some cases the comparison is totally valid. Some comic art absolutely took the pulpy, off-white, imperfect printing into consideration - and a lot of those “remastered” versions just look goddamn wonky, even when the original creators are involved.

These comparisons are some of the most fun I’ve had on Twitter. It confirms two things I think are fair to say without even getting into the weeds: One, the 35mm scans are not perfect and lose shadow detail. And two, the 4K remasters can still look flat and ugly in comparison.

Much like open-matte vs matted, subtitled vs dubbed, I think these 35mm scans are a fascinating artifact and a fun, unique way to experience an alternative to a studio remaster. Are they perfect? No! But that isn’t the point to begin with. Never was, not for me at least.

I also kinda love the argument that “prints were manufactured with major variances - they NEVER looked right!” Oh, okay. Then unless we’ve seen the Answer Print at the studio we’ve never seen a movie before, cool, thanks for telling me the cinematic experience is useless anyway.
