@AllanMaki

Allan Maki gave up a promising career in road hockey to become a Globe and Mail sports writer. He is still searching for 'the story that writes itself.'

@willesonsports Hi, Ed. I'm late to your retirement party [having computer woes] but still wanted to congratulate you on a great career. As much fun as it was to read you at 900 words, reading you at book length was conclusive proof that more is better. Best wishes as you and your family.

Again want to thank everyone who's reached out. The exception is LeBrun, complete pain in the ass. Garrioch isn't much better and don't get me started on Burnside. One final thought. Support local news. Now more than ever we need things which tie communities together.

@ByCruickshank @MrSeanGordon Gentlemen Mr. Scott and Mr. Gordon: This is the story of a man and his animals and their shared love for hockey. PS - This story ran before the birthing of social media which allowed people to look at themselves at every stop sign and take another selfie.

@ByJamesKeller To the lady on my right, thanks for keeping your cool when I said, "I just need five more minutes to finish this piece. Five more minutes."

@imacSportsnet Thanks, Iain. I think scratched out a sidebar on the town crier who lost his job to Gutenberg's printing press. The crier said it was just a fad, that this print thingy would never last because the ink always ran off in your hands. You'll see,

@AllanMaki Congratulations, Al. Should have told you before how much I admired your writing and thoughtful analysis. But I figured it would go to your head. You are a newspaperman.

Having fooled my bosses for 41 years, I have decided to retire from The Globe and Mail with some of my senses still functioning. Effective June 28, the scorecard will show I did 19 years at the Calgary Herald and 22 at the Globe. I'm getting out on good behavior.

@RickMofina Hey Rick, I was at the local drug store and super market and I saw your latest literary offering displayed nicely. Made me think, "I haven't talked to Mr. Mofina in years. Shame on me." Okay, expect me to call soon and see how you're doing. Thanks for the kind words.

@MrSeanGordon @ByCruickshank My two favorites to write were: taking a visit to see meet US president Bill Clinton at the White House; and meeting the guy with the toughest job on the planet.

@Jmizz20 Thank you, Johnny. I trust all is well with you. Me? I could hardly be any better given all the kind words that have come my way. Truly humbling.

@EricFrancis Thanks, Eric. Your words make me blush. It reminds me of that old saying, "I take my job seriously, just not myself." All the best, at home and at work. .

@AllanMaki A tip of the cap for so brilliantly chronicling the sports scene in Calgary and beyond for so many years. This city and this business was lucky to have you.

@SportsnetSpec Many thanks, Spec. In fact, I'm so thankful I'd like to award you a free ride from Edmonton to Calgary in the dead of winter, on a Highway 2 that had better ice than Dallas' Reunion Arena. You game for it?

@JonGatehouse Thanks Jonathan. Yes, I made it to the finish line looking much like a crash-test dummy. At least it hasn't affected my writing. It's all missteak free, sam as ut evevr was.

@perreaux Merci, Les. Looking forward to the next time we cross paths to a fine pub-like establishment where they serve classic beers such as Brador and Laurentide.

@jacktodd46 @cotsonika Jack, many thanks. I still laugh at your story about talking to school kids about journalism. You told them to wait because a whole bunch of sportswriters were going to retire at the same time. We did, but we took our jobs with us. Who saw that coming?

@simmonssteve Hey Steve, I truly appreciate your kind words. It's been a wild ride and my advise to you is to hang onto it as long as you can. The minute you say, 'I'm retiring,' things start to change Not saying it's bad, just that it's different. Thanks for being here along the way.

@ryanjespersen @calgaryherald Thanks, Ryan. I look back at some of those early Herald pieces and wonder - I wrote that? And they published it? And then they paid me? Awesome, just awesome.

@GJohnsonFlames Georgie, from you, those words are golden. You'll have to forgive me because I have to "write" my expenses. Do you have a receipt from May 17 in Edmonton at about 9:30 pm?

@AllanMaki “That’s not writing. It’s typing.” - Truman Capote. In a world of typists, Al Maki writes. Congratulations, Kato, on a stellar career. Among the very best.
