BD (£) “By failing to prioritise viability from the outset, housing schemes risk becoming undeliverable, plagued by delays, design loops and consultation fatigue, Alison Coutinho argues.” Wise words for architects. bdonline.co.uk/opinion/why-bu…

Loved this. Cried through the last 100 pages but that’s probably because I’ve got Covid which is making me weepy. The story unfolds over seven decades (1940-2010) & several continents and I never wanted it to end.

Can anyone suggest a library or research institute that would be interested in letters -many from and to @NewYorker + short stories by writer & journalist Mollie Panter-Downes who was my grandmother? I have so much stuff and don’t know what to do with it. Thanks.

@joshbythesea It’s not particularly saddening. It’s inevitable. Soho is for tourists. There are quicker, cheaper places to get lunch & most supermarkets sell fresh pasta.

A fond, and sad farewell to I Camisa & Son, which will close on August 3. A beautiful Italian deli with excellent sandwiches and fine produce. Trading in Soho since 1929 — an institution. I hope a new location is found. 🇮🇹🥪🍷

@cityofsound @AlastairParvin Gov's new planning legislation should tell public bodies selling land to include small sites and make it a condition of sale they're for Custom and Self-Build.

(Percentage of new homes that is self-build (2008). Most of those in the UK, which languishes at 7%, wouldn't even know that this is possible—due to UK policy and market design prioritising high land prices + property industry vs homes (Ta @AlastairParvin) researchgate.net/figure/Percent…

Listening to a gushy review on @BBCFrontRow of @Tate Blue Rider show that for some inexplicable reason has been rebranded as Expressionists. My takeaway is Munter was a far more gifted and important painter than her partner Kandinsky. And there’s a beautiful Klee in last room

For anyone who's interested, this is Marble Arch 'plaza'. It's quite Eastern bloc in style and people passing through mainly look bewildered as in ' is this really central London?' Yes, guys! It is!

Enjoyed @DaveHill podcast about Marble Arch for the @londonsoc . But he’s too forgiving about the incompetence of stakeholders who've let this so called 'civic square' become a national embarrassment eg. @CityWestminster @TfL @MayorofLondon + many others open.spotify.com/episode/58aHCs…

Iggy Pop and Tom Waites on @BBCMusic6 - both voices so raspy and gravelly it’s hard to tell them apart - is absolutely brilliant. It’s on now.

@jeremytill @PpeterPeter @RIBA It’s fair question but an awkward one for @RIBA given so many of its members are helping to create cities that explicitly support the notion of inequality.

I want streets to look like this. Or similar in whatever favour the location dictates. But attractive, long lasting, elegant.

@timabrahams I asked Twitter if the watercolour renders of Maida Vale flats was some kind of joke - thanks for confirming.

Very funny that all the trads are getting excited about a Victoriana urban extension to Cambridge that won't get built when there's a modernist one that is doing very nicely thank you very much. Which would you go for? Tory boys on Midjourney or more proper places?

Much to like in the Govt scheme to expand Cambridge, a city with acute housing need and a devastating shortage of laboratory space. It would be entirely possible to add a dense, car-independent, traditional quarter - and, somewhat amazingly, it seems this is what they want to do.

Today @michaelgove announced plans for a Cambridge New Quarter to boost UK prosperity and create desperately needed new homes. We would argue passionately that this should be beautiful and sustainable, a network of streets & squares, homes, offices and labs - a lovely place to live, work and play
