Cannot use DPPD to renew an admin cert, but can use DPPD to renew a prof teaching cert and use the teaching cert to renew admin cert.

Continuing Ed: 6 semester credit hours or 150 SCECHs every 5 years, OR have a valid prof. teaching certificate

Grandfathered admins=employed before Jan 4 2010 & has kept up with continuing ed requirements AND has proof of prior employment as an admin.

Got a dean of students who only does discipline, but no instruction? No need for a cert. Asst. Sup only needs cert if they do instruction.

PA 205 of 2010, admins must be certified. Admins=sup, principal, AP, chief business official, anyone who administers instructional programs.

#MichEd you might want to scroll through our Twitter feed today...there is an MDE certification update meeting today. Interesting info.

MDE: can verify content knowledge in a variety of way, e.g. a major, passing the state test, getting natnl board cert.

MDE: NCLB requires that Ts in CORE subject (as defined by NCLB) be highly qualified. That means state certified & have content knowledge.

I'm driving to Oakridge HS in Muskegon this AM to provide a 1/2 day of PD on using data to drive instruction.

MDE: Developing many revised/new guidance docs on what Ts can teach given endorsements. Will include K-12, CTE, & parapros. No links yet.

MDE: we don’t just audit compliance w/ cert laws when we get a complaint, we also do random sample audits. Don’t get investigated for fraud.

MDE: may also want to consider whether it is a good idea to accept someone else’s background check, since you are accountable, not them.

MDE: Hire an employee from another school & that school doesn’t have/won’t share a background check? You MUST fingerprint that new employee.

Note: “teacher leaders” are in T eval bills as eligible to do observations. Want your Ts to observe? May want to explore Adv. Prof. Cert.

MDE: No Ts in Michigan currently hold an Advanced Prof cert.

Ts now have access to new cert: Advanced Prof. Must have a prof cert AND either natnl board cert or have completed a teacher leader program.
