@garyyounge Just liberal rubbish this. I will never ever vote labour again. I will vote for a party to the left of them; but all labour have done my entire life is shit on the working class, call them bigots and look after the middle class.

@northernassist why no extra trains or carriages for the rugby league @TheRFL in Liverpool today??. This just creates bad feeling for the people using trains. Just so short sighted when you have known 6 months in advance

One of the greatest strengths of our profession is its generosity. Every day, educators share ideas, resources, and expertise to support each other and improve outcomes for young people. This thread 🧵celebrates that generosity by highlighting some of the best shared practice. ⬇️

Over the last few years I've become a lot better at understanding how this website can affect my mental health. I confess, the events of the last 24 hours have been bad for me. I didn't sleep last night, and I've felt physically sick all day today. I went for a big walk this afternoon, and I want to talk now. Background: unfortunately, I often get sucked into toxic debates, and I struggle to "let go", often to the benefit of nobody, and to my own detriment. One of the levers I've gotten used to pulling is therefore "disengaging" - just not getting involved, not saying anything. This lever has its obvious advantages, but also less obvious disadvantages. I am very lucky to have a large group of people who appear (strangely) to be interested in what I have to say. In general, not saying anything isn't the end of the world. But in some contexts I feel a strong obligation to try and explain things. When it comes to Israel issues for example, I've tried really hard to be open and honest and to engage everyone in good faith. I try to approach the conversation from a position of both local and distant knowledge, and to shed light in an arena where heat is the norm. Often, this has been really fruitful, and people have been grateful. The pull of radicalism is strong, and I think it is important to collectively work as hard as we can to fight against all kinds of extremism. The second disadvantage is around guilt about the way friends are being treated or spoken about. These debates don't exist in a vacuum. They affect real people in the real world. Good people, doing good work and trying to make a difference. Where friends of mine are being called "fascists", "far right" or "members of a cult," me taking the option of disengaging is most certainly not cost neutral. So that's "disengaging." Pros and cons. My main second lever is "blocking." My criterion for blocking is not "disagrees with me." Hopefully anyone familiar with my work will know that I have fruitful disagreements pretty much every day here, and will know that my criterion for blocking is "argumentative and toxic." Anyone who engages in bad faith or rudeness or whatever...I will just block them. And yes, that includes a whole bunch of people with whom I generally strongly agree when it comes to politics or education or whatever. I don't want them on my timeline, because it always ends up worse for me. So I block. Circling back to events of the weekend. Hopefully, some of the dust has settled, and a more fruitful conversation can occur. I am not angry, but I am deeply upset and pained. Many people that I respect said and did things that I consider to be rash and unwise, and likely to lead to a net negative. That's ok, I can deal with that. But then the "haters" joined in, and it got worse and worse, and the discourse rapidly escalated to a point of extreme toxicity and hyperbole, driven by tankies, anonymous accounts, and out and out grifters. That's not good for anybody, and I chose to disengage and block. Ok, so why do I think some of the positions taken were rash and unwise? I will happily tell you, but in light of all the above, not here. Sadly, every time I try to have a public conversation about this I get mobbed by the type of people I need to block or disengage from, and that - again - doesn't help anybody. Certainly not me. So instead, I am going to try a different approach. If you are interested in the reasoning behind my thoughts, please DM me. I will answer as best I can. But, and here's the kicker, I will not engage with anyone who is A. Clearly trying to pick a fight B. Anonymous C. Not ready to change their mind Additionally, I will discuss this with you from the baseline position that "what Israel is doing is really really bad." I am not going to try and convince you that their war is justified, moral, proportionate, within the rules of war, not genocide or anything along those lines. I will approach you from that baseline position, but try to explain why boycotting this particular event, and then the event's domestic sponsor, was rash and unwise. If you think you meet the brief, please do DM me. I have some time this week, so I will try to give as much of it to you as I can. Like I said, there are many people here who I disagree with, but deeply respect, and if you hold that same respect for me, then be willing to reach out and change your mind. Hopefully I won't regret this, and hopefully as a community we can maybe do a bit better next time. (Oh, and if you use the comments here to needle me or pick a fight...guess what: you're getting blocked.)
