I really do respect the way that Dutch, German and Scandinavian women trained their men to be happy with cold brown bread, butter and cheese for 95% of meals. It’s way easier than cooking, plus this diet made their men WAY more handsome than everyone else’s.

@SlimWiggy Jaime Fraser might be the best male lead in any modern tv show at the moment. Capable, brave, loving and assertive.

While references to the Barbary pirates and Islamic enslavement of European Christians is rare in the modern era, here's a notable exception. Outlander (book 1991, show 2014) doesn't focus much on the topic but does introduce a character who had been abducted and maimed during his captivity in Algiers. It's brief, but just these few sentences about character Hugh Munro's story says it all. Captured at sea, held in captivity, tortured in an attempt to convert him "to the Musselman religion," which is precisely how an 18th century character would've worded it. This was the all too unpleasant reality until the 19th century for Europeans. A constant threat of abduction and enslavement by Muslims, who in no way see a moral or religious issue in conquest, taxation or enslavement of non Muslims. Overall, Outlander was great at including these bits of history and kind of flew under the radar as a rather unwoke bit of television. There were a few films shortly after WW2 on the this topic but references dropped off sharply after that era, which made this scene all the more refreshing and realistic to the period:

@louisvarge Read up on the powderkeg that is the Balkans to see what eventually happens when cultures try to love together. Also the mass migration periods post Roman empire. Or the Saxons/Normans. A polarised multicultural society will always eventually explode in violence and oppression

i don’t understand why immigration of any sort is universally unpopular. almost every country on earth heavily restricts it this is a recent thing too! before world war 1, you could just take a steamship from Brazil to Paris for $20 and decide you lived in France now what changed? are people bad now? is that the reason more people are even more bad? back then income wasn’t taxed in most jurisdictions either. now we tax our own people’s income & we don’t allow others to immigrate and earn income. i ask again, are people bad? is working bad? where did this zero sum attitude come from? what if we could also start deporting our own citizens, to have as few people as possible. would that be even better? is 0 the best amount of people? what is the point of all this?

@Number10cat @BenedictSpence I'd just add that the introduction of Anglo-Saxon culture made Britons serfs under their rule, Norman culture disenfranchised and oppressed anglo-saxons and the Irish.. there will always be a competing hierarchy of cultures which is settled through violence and oppression.

@BenedictSpence Do Wales, Scotland and England have unique cultures Benny? How about the regions within them? Britain has been a collection of various tribes, with differing cultures, for millennia.

I'm 43 now, and I've now seen three distinct phases in my life regarding attitudes towards gender/sex. Here's a handy guide for determining which one is the correct take: 1) Pre-1990ish: "Little Billy can't play with dolls b/c he's a boy and everyone knows boys don't play with dolls" ❌ 2) 1990-2010: "Little Billy can play with dolls if he wants, boys can play with dolls. It doesn't make him any less of a boy" ✅ 3) 2010 - Present : "Little Billy IS a girl because he plays with dolls, because everyone knows boys don't play with dolls" ❌ As we can see, #2 is the correct choice. #1 and #3 are examples of toxic right wing gender norms, and toxic left wing gender norms, respectively. That's the funny thing about gender ideology; despite its adherents loud claims that they are somehow smashing traditional gender-based norms and stereotypes, they're actually rigidly enforcing them. The truly enlightened viewpoint is that there is no right or wrong way to be a boy or girl and kids should feel free to explore and play with whatever they want without activists with an agenda slapping an inappropriate label on them and forcing them into a pathway towards lifelong medicalization and dependency on Big Pharma.

The leader of the Lib Dems, and the leader and deputy leader of the Green party, think some women have penises. In itself, it seems like a relatively unimportant matter. But it is symptomatic of a contempt for science and evidence-based truth. Could you vote for a flat-Earther?

@erikkain @Forbes I'm planning on seeing the finale tonight so I'm holding off on reading your article. But the season up until now has been frankly baffling. It has played out like a normal run of the mill season with no apparent buildup in regard to the Trine travel question.

It wasn't as bad as Game of Thrones or Stranger Things, but the ending of Outlander left much to be desired. Here's my take: ‘Outlander’s Series Finale Was A Disappointing Ending To A Mediocre Final Season via @forbes forbes.com/sites/erikkain…
