Imagine if the government of your country violently and unlawfully would take over the main opposition party and install its new puppet-leader to head it. This is happening right now in Turkey. If Western leaders turn a blind eye and continue to support Erdogan, they will go down in history as his partners in crime. Perhaps, to many of them, Erdogan represents the dictator they would like to be! Decent leaders of the West should confront Erdogan’s brutal dictatorship.

The latest police escalation against @herkesicinCHP headquarters is beyond alarming. This further attempt to intimidate the democratic opposition is unacceptable and further undermines the rule of law in Türkiye. We stand with CHP, its leader @eczozgurozel, and all those forces in Türkiye defending freedom, justice and democracy.

The General Affairs Council should urgently address the situation in Turkey and EU–Turkey relations and take action. Erdogan’s dismantling of opposition parties marks a decisive step towards an authoritarian regime and democratic collapse, with major consequences for the EU.

Strategically important or not, the West and the EU needs to take a firmer stance on Turkey and Erdogan’s autocratic tendencies!
