#SBI Employees Announce Nationwide Strike, Banking Services Likely to Be Hit Employees of the #StateBankOfIndia, the country’s largest public sector bank, have announced a two-day nationwide strike on May 25 and 26, raising concerns over disruption of banking services across #India. The strike call has been given by the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation over a 16-point charter of demands. Union leaders stated that repeated discussions with the bank management failed to resolve long-pending employee issues, forcing staff to launch the agitation. Ahead of the proposed strike, the federation has also written letters to Members of Parliament from both the #LokSabha and #RajyaSabha, seeking their intervention in resolving the dispute. The union urged MPs to take up the matter with the central government and SBI management to prevent inconvenience to employees and customers. Key demands raised by the employees include filling staff shortages, recruitment of sub-staff and security personnel, stopping outsourcing in permanent jobs, and taking action against the alleged mis-selling of insurance products to customers. The federation also alleged that increasing workload pressure and shortage of manpower are severely affecting employees and banking operations. Banking services are expected to face major disruptions due to a series of consecutive holidays around the strike period. Banks will remain closed on May 23 for the fourth Saturday and on May 24 for Sunday, followed by the proposed strike on May 25 and 26. In some regions, Bakrid holidays on May 27 and 28 may further extend the interruption in services. Officials say customers may face difficulties in cash withdrawals, cheque clearances, branch services, loan-related work and other routine banking transactions during this period. However, digital banking services including# ATMs, #UPI, internet banking and mobile banking are expected to function normally. Meanwhile, banking unions have warned that if discussions with the management fail once again, the protest may intensify in the coming days.
