Hello friends and foes. As someone whose X personality almost entirely revolves around criticizing Jack Hughes, the last couple of weeks have been understandably frustrating for me given the nonstop praise and fan circle jerk surrounding him since his “golden goal"! Now that the endorphin high from Jack’s overtime winner has worn off and fans are no longer giddy with excitement, it’s time to get back to the facts. I’m happy for Jack as a person - he created an iconic moment for Americans, hockey fans, and himself that (most) of the country rallied around for a few days. Very cool. But I will not back down from the fact that he is a detriment to this team. In fact, it’s arguably a bigger issue now than it was pre Olympics, considering the marketing push, ticket sales narrative, and fanboy circle jerk that has followed because of one 3v3 goal. Jack is back to looking like the same lackluster, underwhelming player he’s been all season: avoiding physical contact, careless with the puck, flashing offensive ability without consistently finishing. And the team remains consistently AWFUL. My biggest takeaway from the Olympics is that Jack thrives in a sheltered 5v5 role. He is still not a player you build a team around. I know this will deeply upset the weird, blind fanboys who worship the Hughes family, but the truth hurts!

anyways: i love womens hockey. the growth the sport has seen in the past 10+ years is insane. despite all odds, we’re growing the game in ways that i used to dream of as a kid. these women deserve all the praise and should be celebrated.
