@asymmetricinfo When I was starting my first kitchen, I had to decide whether to build out an Indian spice box or a Thai one. It was a bougie problem, but I like to cook! And I couldn't afford both sets.

So on the one hand these arguments are kind of crazy and on the other hand kids today are used, in a way that kids of my generation were not, to eating a wide variety of ethnic cuisines that each come with their own essential starter kit.

Some reasons why cooking is overwhelming for many: -To cook each cuisine requires different base set of spices, staples, etc -Popular recipes often include obscure, expensive ingredients -Purchasing exact item amts often not possible -Utilizing rest of perishable food challenging

Where did “brunch” came from as a social norm? In 1895, British writer Guy Beringer published an essay called “Brunch: A Plea.” His argument: What if instead of waking up early for a heavy formal Sunday meal… we slept in, gathered late morning, drank cocktails, ate eggs, and recovered from Saturday night together? Brunch was one of the first true “lifestyle meals.” Adapting social norms in the pursuit of living life (joy!) vs defaults of when you’re supposed to eat.

Grocery prices are goated for Internet Discourse because nobody realizes how regional they are. I pay twice as much or more for chicken (both regular and organic) at a less bougie store than my mom does on the west coast, even with comparable prices for other staples
