The whole meeting yesterday was to indulge the "Save City Hall" folks and a minority of council people, so the @CityOfDallas could check ✅ a box and they could "feel heard." Even the consultants confess the systems are more complex than a JFK conspiracy theory. If for some odd reason council wants to keep it, expect costs to balloon and timelines to drag on longer so future @CityOfDallas council will forget about prioritizing deferred maintenance...again… As has been the pattern for 50 years. We taxpayers foot the bill for what, exactly? A vanity project for architecture dreamers and the core NIMBY crowd led by @AdamBazaldua who treat our public cash like their personal Monopoly money? “But muh historic preservation!” Yeah, 1978 construction doesn’t pay the pothole repairs and ain't exactly "historic." Skip it unless you’re into subsidizing an ugly style of architecture in any era. Old Dallas buildings have soul… but this brutalist one doesn't and never did. Certainly not for the time and price to us taxpayers. Lets hear what's said on June 3 with a better scope of options than just trying to justify your political bias against local, and internationally reputably known companies like @AECOM .

Calling @CityOfDallas city Hall an “architectural treasure” is a stretch, bro. So what if it was designed by someone you consider famous (almost nobody knew who I.M. Pei was here until this year). Yes, it is visually iconic. Yes, niche architecture goobs like you enjoy dramatically photographing it from low angles like they’ve discovered an abandoned moon base where city permits are processed by Soviet block astronauts. That still does not automatically make it great urban architecture. Especially for Dallas which has its own rich architectural history. And frankly, Dallas City Hall represents many of the worst instincts of late-stage monumental Brutalism: anti-human scale, defensive urban design, hostile public space, and a kind of cold bureaucratic gigantism that mistakes intimidation for civic dignity. YOu are confusing “important” architecture with “good” architecture. They are not the same thing. The building’s defenders speak about it like it is the Pantheon or Stonehenge. But if you strip away the celebrity architect’s name and evaluate the structure honestly as a lived civic environment, the romance starts collapsing pretty quickly. Start with the most basic question: How does the building make ordinary Dallas residents FEEL? Not architecture critics sipping prosecco. Not preservation boards. Not graduate students with black turtlenecks and Leica cameras. Regular people. The answer, overwhelmingly, is: small, distant, unwelcome, and vaguely surveilled. That matters and is proven that in 50's, the site has manifested into a dead zone of downtown.

This meeting has turned into a clusterf*k. Trying to propose staying in the building during renovation and they're trying to find all sorts of loopholes including worker safety. There are OCD people wearing masks in that building today. You think they're gonna stay in the building with aerosolized asbestos in a poorly ventilated building... even the ducts for the ventilation are wrapped in asbestos!? The pride of these councilmembers to "Save City Hall" are trading the legacy of I.M. Pei over not just the fiduciary responsibility of its residents, but the health and safety of residents AND workers in the building! I have to give credit to @Jaime_Resendez for bringing some levity and pointing out the bizarre behavior by some @CityOfDallas council members of lambasting the @AECOM consultants last time, but being pleasant toned to this group.

I don't get the people who fawn all over these people who aren't from here. I.M. Pei or Wyland don't have any connection here. Dallas has plenty of capable artists to paint murals. In fact that's actually what's gonna happen there anyway. And as UTA Arlington has proven, we have good young architects as well. Let them go…

This is why some council members are pushing for a the status quo. They dont care about the building they only care about the profit for their district, the rest of the city be damned. Jobs, sales tax, etc will go to Collin county but at least district 12 & 11 get that TIF money
