In an Active Directory domain, authentication relies on the Kerberos protocol. When a user logs in, they receive a Ticket Granting Ticket (TGT) from the domain controller. That TGT allows them to request service tickets (TGS) to access file servers, databases, applications, and other domain resources. If an attacker gains access to a machine and extracts Kerberos tickets from memory, they can reuse those tickets to impersonate legitimate users often without ever knowing the user’s password. This makes detection harder because the authentication appears valid from a protocol standpoint. In more advanced scenarios, attackers may forge tickets entirely. If the domain’s cryptographic secrets are compromised, they can generate tickets that grant administrative privileges. The real danger of ticket abuse is persistence. An attacker with forged or stolen tickets can operate quietly, appearing as a legitimate domain user. Even if passwords are changed, previously issued tickets may remain valid until they expire or are invalidated. That is why organizations enforce strict privilege separation, rotate sensitive keys, monitor domain controller logs, and implement strong credential protection mechanisms. Because of this, cybersecurity teams invest heavily in monitoring and detecting abnormal Kerberos activity.
