A remarkable failure of leadership in this country is leading to terrible outcomes and a sense hopelessness for young people. If young people cannot see their future and a way forward, the future of the country is grim. The crux of the problem is the Temporary Foreign Worker Program - which undercuts jobs for young people, by enabling the hiring of low wage foreigners instead. I have so many questions about this. For example, when did it become acceptable to create an underclass of workers who are denied the full rights of citizenship? A terrible model for building a country. What used to be ‘first jobs’ for young people are now filled with low paid foreign workers. And young Canadians, as a result, are struggling with joblessness. Urgent action is needed: The Temporary Foreign Worker Program is exploitative, just like the sham ‘international’ schools that pry on young people from elsewhere - and needs to be halted immediately. In this model, corporate giants underpay foreign workers and the middle class vanishes. This has been enabled by Federal policy. The Fed’s need to fix this. Earlier this week Ontario Mayors called on the Federal government to help with the crisis of homelessness reshaping our cities - big and small. It’s critical to connect the dots. Low wage foreign workers without access to stable housing are vulnerable to homelessness. Young Canadians without jobs are vulnerable to homelessness. It is a lose/lose model. The problem is now undeniable and out in the open. Will the government act?
