Tomorrow, June 1st, is my birthday. I turn 54. It is also the first day of Pride Month.
To be fully transparent, I can’t believe I made it past my twenties. Growing up as an openly gay teen and young adult in the 80s and 90s was not easy. In my twenties, so many gay folks, including friends and acquaintances, lost their battle to HIV/AIDS. I have often asked myself why I was spared.
With everything going on in our country and across the world, I sometimes find it difficult to be optimistic about a future that is uncertain. This year, more than ever before, I am struggling to commemorate the day of my birth. But, I am also aware that joy and celebration, in the midst of chaos and oppression, is resistance.
So, tomorrow, I will board a plane. I will embark on a trip meticulously planned by my husband Tony.
And, I will celebrate.
I will do so in honor of my immigrant parents, who gave everything up so that I could have opportunities they never dreamed of - so, that I could live fully as me.
I will celebrate in reverance to the many queer and trans humans who fought so that I could love my husband Tony openly.
And, finally, I will celebrate my birth in thanks to my younger self, Junior.
Junior, your life has not always been easy, but it has been filled with the love and support of your family and friends. Know that you are deserving of all good things, even when you don’t fully believe that you are.
I am proud of the human being you are continuing to become.
Your almost 54 year old self, Dr. José Medina

I have been blown away by all the kind messages of support and encouragement over the last couple of months. It really has made the world of difference to William and me and has helped us both through some of the harder times.
I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days. On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.
My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months. On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home.
I’m looking forward to attending The King’s Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet.
I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much needed time to heal.
Thank you so much for your continued understanding, and to all of you who have so bravely shared your stories with me.
