Here we go again, just in time for a new World Cup cycle. And with the WC in the US, this trope will likely be more nauseating than ever. The "best athletes" myth completely misunderstands soccer culture and player development. Elite soccer nations don't win just because they have fast or strong athletes; they win because of a deep-rooted, systemic infrastructure (which has a 100+ year head start on the US) that refines technical skill and tactical maturity from early childhood. If our top NFL or NBA athletes grew up playing soccer here, they would still be product of the same flawed US developmental system. They wouldn't magically inherit world-class soccer IQ or a world-class national team structure. Athleticism without the soccer brain is useless on the world stage.

It's a home-team broadcast, but the commentary in this moment is way off. This game was physical. Freeman got agitated. Berhalter flew in and rightfully got tossed. Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro told reporters that G. López and the entire bench thought it was a Paraguay throw in.

Watching this game again. After Reyna is cautioned for shoving Julio Enciso off the ball, Kyle Martino says, "This is good. The US have to be instigators." Martino then refers to the reaction of Paraguay's bench as "nasty" and "ugly", adding Freeman was "not the instigator." 🤷‍♂️
