Other people's expectations are not your obligations. Responsibilities are commitments you choose to make. Upholding them is a key to taking care of others. Expectations are pressures others impose on you. Rejecting them is often necessary to take care of yourself.

Many people see hard work as a sign of virtue. But a strong work ethic doesn't guarantee strong ethics. On Juneteenth, we commemorate the anniversary of the delayed but welcome news of freedom reaching the enslaved Black folks in Galveston, Texas. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest hours, there is cause to hope — and a reason to keep building a country that lives up to its highest ideals.
