*LASEPA Installs Air Quality Monitors at Ikorodu Iron and Steel Companies* The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has taken a significant step to enhance air quality monitoring in the Odogunyan area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, by installing six air quality sensors around the location of different iron and steel companies operating in the area. The companies, which include African Steel Mills (Nigeria) Limited, LandCraft Steel, Pylkit Steel, SunFlag Steel Nig Ltd, Top Steel Nig Ltd, and Gemini Steel Nig Ltd, were previously assessed by LASEPA, and the findings necessitated the installation for regular air quality monitoring in the interest of the public. According to Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of LASEPA, the agency's assessment report necessitated the installation of real-time air monitoring equipment to provide scientific data to help the companies reduce pollutant loads and improve air quality. "The presence of these pollutants is considered inimical to public health, and we are committed to working with these companies to bring the pollution load to a permissible level," Dr. Ajayi stated. The installation of the air quality sensors is one of the outcomes of the meeting held between LASEPA and the companies on December 2, this year, where the agency emphasized the need for improved abatement measures to mitigate the environmental impacts of their operations. LASEPA's proactive approach according to Ajayi is aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and protecting public health in the Odogunyan area of Ikorodu. He revealed that the State Commissioner for the Environment,Tokunbo Wahab has directed the installation of more air quality monitoring sensors especially in areas suspected to be at high risk of pollution as a result of industrial activities, adding that LASEPA would intensify efforts in monitoring to ensure compliance with the environmental standard regulations .
