@VraanTheLizard @TimothyEveland It’s an AI generated image and terminology used in fencing clubs is dependent on preference. Almost none of the people at my place use improper terminology or ambiguous modern creations.

@Conjunctura @TimothyEveland Yeah, like most of our HEMA lingo. The point is, the sword in the image has all the characteristics of 16th century mercenary greatswords we today like to call zweihanders. All, with the exception of the author screwing up the size.

@VraanTheLizard @TimothyEveland Zweihander is incredibly ambigious and is only associated with greatswords in a modern sense, there is absolutely zero account of it being used to refer to said swords in historical treatises.

@AvionBreton @Knightly_Hist As far as I understand bicoque is an undefined term from a French manuscript, more accurately these can just be referred to as variations of close helm.

I don't think most people truly grasp how rare it is to see early german close helmets depicted in the 1950s. Videogames are only NOW (with expert consultants) starting to represent them. Many historical armor aficionados don't even know about them.

@attachedkiosk @Knightly_Hist This is really the only explanation that tracks at this point, purposefully making the middle ages look worse than they were, and gee, I wonder who kept getting kicked out of countries during the middle ages?

@AaronWG_ @Mud_and_Blood Jupons are not always quilted, one of the only extant jupons is but it is definitely not the defining feature. A favorite statue of mine, one of St. George in Dijon, does not have quilting.

@Conjunctura @Mud_and_Blood I usually associate jupons with quilted textural overcoats. The nomenclature is funny when it comes to medieval uniformology, no?

@Knightly_Hist @manwhoexplodes Completely forgot I intended to reply to this, I meant it in the sense that polearms are more capable of accurate thrusts towards the voids in harness, as opposed to a mace or hammer.

@Conjunctura @manwhoexplodes Neither the lance/spear or the mace can easily penetrate or undermine armor on foot or horseback. They still can very much be used to kill or beat an armored man into submission. But they serve completely different purposes so I don't think it's a fair/useful comparison to make

A mid 16th century flanged mace. A simple weapon in concept (and appliability) yet of obviously elaborate craftsmanship. Bargello Museum, Florence.
